You are a good woman! How much do you plan to spend on the rifle? I've always thought a 6-24 would be too much scope for a rimfire, but the 17 HMR is good for 150 yds or so.

Way too much scope for a .17HMR. At the top end I would not go over 12x for 2 reasons. The usable distance of the rifle does not warrant anymore power and the size of the rifles in that caliber do not warrant any larger rifle scope. Several manufactures actually make a scope that have reticles tailored to that caliber's ballistics. BSA and I believe Tasco and Cabelas have those scopes, usually called Sweet 17s. They would be plenty of scope with reasonably good optics for that rifle, unless you are buying a high-end 17HMR, then I would go with one on the Nikon Monarch scopes, on sale at SWFA, in a similar upper magnifcation range to go with the rifle.
