I like to shoot targets, plates and groundhogs up to 500 yards.  The rounds I use currently  use include 204, 223, 308, 6mmBR and soon 6.5x47 Lapua and 243.

I prefer a mil-dot based reticle, mostly for the occasional holdover and windage compensation.  I do not mind turning knobs for elevation.   I do not like BDC reticles.

To date, I have mostly used (don't laugh) Simmons 44 Mag scopes in 6.5-20x44 mil-dot config.  I also have a Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24x40 scope that I like.

I'm looking for another scope and have a budget of about $1k.   I'd like my next scope to have:
  • Sharp optics with at least 20x.  Maybe even be able to resolve 308 bullet holes out to 500 yards in good conditions?
  • Crisp, perfectly repeatable clicks.  I hate mushy knobs.
  • I'm a lefty shooter so I really don't care about AO vs. side focus.
  • 1/4 MOA adjustment preferred.
  • Decent eye relief
So far, I am considering the following scopes:
  • Zeiss Conquest 6.5-20x50
  • Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24x50
  • Bushnell Elite 6500 4.5-30x50
  • Leupold Mk4 6.5-20x50 with TMR
  • Leupold Mk4 8.5-25x50 with TMR
  • Even considering a refurb Nikon 6.5-20x44 Monarch UCC (#6605)
Obviously, there is quite a range of price here.  I am guessing that based on my #1 criteria -- optical clarity -- that the Zeiss would be #1 on this list.  How much better is it compared to the Elites, Leupolds and Nikons?

How do the controls compare?

Which would YOU pick and why?

Thanks!

Conquest is indeed very good, but Bushnell Elite 4200 scopes are lapping at the Conquest'd heels.  Elite 6500 scopes seemed as good as the 4200, if not better, but I have not done a detailed test on them.

I'd be inclined to go with either Elite 4200 or Elite 6500 depending on how much money you are willing to spend.  I think they offer a lot for the money.

mk 4 6.5x20 with tmr, you won't be able to see 308 holes with any of the scope you mention.

Did I read that right $1,000.00 for a paper puncher ? I'd have to be able to eat the targets or be winning some  bucks to put that into a paper puncher .... $1K = $1,000.00 or am I wrong ?
