Hello. Looking for input on a sight enhancement for a Mossberg MVP - 24" HB Varmint bolt in .223. Hoping to get some specific information on scopes that have a BDC or have turrets for the .223 round. Not sure if the specific bullet gr turrets are needed or not? Mainly looking to snipe ground squirrels, coyotes and the such. Hoping to spend $500 or less.

Have you considered a Mil Dot reticle?

Check these out. Decent scopes for decent prices. Nikon "Spot-on" is quite useful. Worth a look. |

+1 Nikon continues to prove it's self as best bang for the buck in AR applications. Should definitely be in your top contenders. Welcome to the OT! |

Over the last month or so I've been browsing this site and others like it. I have seen the Nikon and a couple of others that offer the BDC type aid for AR or .2223 specifically. Would like to know if anyone has shot it and if it comes close to the claims. I've shot MIL-Dot and have one on an AR now but I don't know enough about it and know I am not getting the full benefit of the scope.

The one a friend has is set to Hornady 55gr V-Max ammo and was dead on. Taking out groundhogs at 300+yds just dialing to distance and shooting. It's great when things do what they are suppose to. But barrel length does come into play. His AR is a Varminter with the 20" barrel. For the turret to match up you have to consider everything that effects ballistics. I have the Nikon 300 blackout BDC but have not been able to spend time checking BDC and turret accuracy. I load for it and should be able to build a recipe to match everything. I have not heard anything negative about either and feel that you would be pleased with it should you decide to get one. Let us know what you get and how it does. Good luck! |

If you get a BDC scope, no matter which one, you are going to have to "shoot it in" for the ammo load you are using... unfortunately, there is nothing automatic about the process until you've spent a lot of time with the scope/rifle/ammo you are going to use. Once you understand the operation, under the conditions you will encounter(very important), you can have confidence in BDC. It is not magic. I know you know that, just stating the obvious, making it clear. No scope will do the job for you, just helps you do the job if you understand it. Completely.

I actually had decent results using the Nikon BDC. As KB rightly stated, they have to be "shot in" to be effective. When used in conjunction with a laser range finder, (if you have time???) they make for an effective tool at known distances.
I've never used the Nikon Spot On so I defer to others on it's usefulness, or the lack thereof.
