I always size brass as Sakomato illustrates with a slightly firm bolt closure. I don't know if it makes much difference with regards to accuracy, but I firmly believe that "working" the brass as little as possible extends it's life. With regards to the belt.....? Ignore it.

As usual, excellent explanation and supporting pics, Bob!
Not only is brass life extended by headspacing on the shoulder, but contact between 2 conical surfaces (case shoulder and chamber shoulder) with a slight crush fit has a self-centering affect that theoretically ensures the bullet enters the rifling leade with less yaw vs the sometimes sloppy shoulder to chamber fit when headspacing on the belt. I say "theoretically" because that will naturally vary with chamber and case dimensions. All else being equal, the closer the headspace datum is to the bullet, the better for wringing out all the precision your rifle is capable of.

How do you think the guys here learned all they know...? By asking questions. Nothing like shortening the learning curve by asking others for a little help. |

+1!!
When I started out my only advice came from reload manuals,HANDLOADER mag,and Sinclair. No internet back then. I was the only one in my area reloading. Got quite a few guys started though.

It is defiantly addicting, most of my buddies use to think its was a wast of time until we headed out to the range and I showed them the accuracy I've gotten with my tika 30-06 out to 400 (longest public range around these parts) with my 180 AB, federal 210M and RL22 @ 60.5gr. With thanks to this form and its members for helping me along. Most of them have either started reloading or have purchased the die's and are coming over to my home to have me help them reload.
Cheers to you all,

Ok, so I got to shoot some FL which measured about 2.254" once fired measured 2.275" now I was trying to set my full length resizer to just resize the neck and not bump the shoulder back. I turned the die so to just touch the shell holder and then backed it out 1/4 turn. Ran the once fired brass through and measured. It turned out to be 2.280". That's an increase of 5 thou. It really don't make spence to me so I tried once more same thing an increase of 5 thou.
Does anyone have any words of wisdom to help me either understand what happens or find out what I've done wrong? |

Absolutely, that is 100% to be EXPECTED
The reason is that when your case is entering the die, it will start sizing at the case body closest to the case head first and then size progressively up the case body towards the shoulder. When the die first sized the case at the bottom it will squeeze the case like a balloon and push the shoulder up and out. The shoulder will not be sized and pushed back into place until you have adjusted the die down far enough. Normal instructions for dies say to set the die by threading to touch the shell holder and then threading it IN an additional 1/4 turn for FL sizing. However, that may push the shoulder back too far. Here's what you do. 1. Set the die to touch the shell holder 2. Size a case and try it in your gun If it fits you're done, if it is a tight bolt close 3. Set the die down or in just a tiny bit more 4. Size a case and try it in your gun If it fits you're done, if it is a tight bolt close 5. Set the die down or in just a tiny bit more 6. Size a case and try it in your gun etc etc You are using your gun to let you know when the shoulder is sized down just enough to let the case chamber It helps to have witness marks on the die/press since there is a fine line between the case not being sized enough and too much |

Thanks guys, but i though It would take 2 or 3 firings to have my brass expand to the max (in 300mw) and then once I've gotten the brass to that point i would want to bump the shoulder just a little, thus extending the life of my brass. With always checking my gun for fit.
Also I have some new norma brass and some new Winchester with the Norma being 40% more $ wise what differences should I expect to see in the brass?

That's correct, it will take 2 or 3 firings for your brass to fully expand
BUT you shortened that when you set your die by unthreading it up only 1/4 turn. At 1/4 turn off the shell holder your die will still contact the case body and balloon the shoulder forward. If you want to only neck size (partial neck size) you would have to unthread the die off the shell holder about 3/4 turn (actual amount will be determined by the inside dimensions of your die as related to the size of your chamber, hint they are not all the same). At 3/4 turn back you will only size about 3/4 of the neck but the die will not contact the case body and the shoulder will not be moved. It will leave 1/4 of the neck fire formed size
Hey bud, thanks
I'll send you some sheep porn to show my appreciation for your kind words!

normas just of higher quality and tighter specs. More uniform wall thickness higher purity brass. more concentric and better lot matching weight/length.. Finally, primer hole better centered, deburred etc.
basically I'd load Normas right outof the box....Winnies I'd check lenghth, debur, sort by weight.
Annealing is another issue to be aware of. As u fire the rounds it works the brass and causes it to harden. I typically will re-anneal the casings every 5 re-loads if I'm FL sizing to return the brass to a more workable state.
