I finally got to shoot my bench rest rifle @ 300 yds(6mmPPC) and could barely see holes. Not very encouraging since I was using my Kowa 82mm 27xLER eye piece. So the question is do I need a larger scope? 100mm? or more power? For the price of a new eyepiece for the Kowa I can buy a Celestron Ultima 100mm 20x-60xscope. Does anyone know how well this spots bullet holes at long range? I have heard that the Oberwerk 25/40x 100mm & 125mm binoculars do well since they are feeding an image to both eyes and the brain can pick it up better than squinting with one eye. Does anyone have feed back on large binoculars?

After owning a Kowa I think you will be disappointed with the Ultima. Spend the 198 bucks and get the 50x eyepiece or shell out a few more dollars and get the 20-60x eye piece. The 100mm objective won't make your target any clearer, but it will allow more light to enter the scope. Since the optics in the ultima can't compare to those of the Kowa overall picture quality will not be any better which is why I vote for the new eyepiece. That being said, I am pretty surprised you can't make out your rounds at 300 yards with the 27x eyepiece you already have. Unless you are spotting with a lazy eye or something the picture quality will not be any better looking through a set of binos. The image you see through your scope using your dominate eye is as good as the image you will see with both eyes open looking through a set of binos with comparable optics. |

I would get an eyepiece for the existing scope. a 40x or 50x will work better than the zoom. Very few zooms work at that magnification.
You did not specify which Kowa scope you have. The Celeston Ultima ED 80mm is very nice and comparable to the similar sized Kowas, but their eyepieces are lacking. |

Bigger scope is not needed, like others said more magnification will do the job - or a visit to your eye doctor
I have an old Kowa TS-601 with 20-60x eyepiece. I can spot .30 cal bullet holes at 300m with 20x but with 40x i don't have to search for them. I rarely/never use the 60x. Edited by Nordic |

You can also try the new targets that leave a "splat" on the target instead of a hole. I think Caldwell makes some called Insta-view.
