A .22LR is plenty of gun for elk... for brain shots at point blank range.
The point being, pretty much any reasonable cartridge will do the job just fine within reasonable, defined limits and with good shot placement as long as the shooter understands and respects those limits.

I love my Sako FinnLight 7-08,,,,I like the low recoil and the way it feels shooting it. Im still going to have a McMillian marble stock built for it this winter.....It will still be a Lightweight Rifle and will work fine for me on Elk as I can place a bullet where I need to with it...
I just bought a Remy 5R in 308 2 months ago, hell its still just sitting in the corner....Ive killed most of my Elk with a 270 Winchester using plain old soft point Winchester 150gr bullets or Nosler Partitians......
I know guys who have killed many more Elk than I while (kids) growing up with there favorite and only rifle, a 22-250.....Personally I would not do it today, unless I was hungry....

Since I have 3 308s I don't feel the need for a 7mm-08. I have nothing against it though. I'm not one to quibble over .62 of a mm either. My 7mm round is the 284win, which is like a 7mm-08 +p. Whether you reload or buy ammo the 308 gives a lot more options, either will do. If we all hunted with a Savage 110 in 30-06 it would be rather boring, wouldn't it?

I know I am getting into this discussion late, but what about the 260rem (6.5-08)? It's cousin the 6.5x55 is hugely popular in Europe for large game. Ballistically it shoots as well as the 300 win mag.

Have both ,,But would lean towards the 308 for a heavier round availability, selction and ammo selcetion
