I need to load some .308 Win  with  175 gr SMK and I was thinking about using VARGET.
Rem 700 26 in R5 Mil Spec 11.25 in twist.
I am wondering what you guys are loading the 175 SMK with.
Hogdon site shows 42gr Varget at 2583fps and  45 gr of Varget at 2690
It would seem that both Black Hills and Federal Gold Metal Match are loaded at 2600fps
That leaves me thinking about 44.6 gr of Varget ?????  but my Sierra book is 35yrs old and doesnt have 175s or Varget and my new Horniday book shows 43.2 gr Varget at 2500 as max.
I found a couple of loads on the net but I'm wondering what you guys are using?

Powder Hodgdon Varget

I've not messed around with Varget but I'm pushing the same bullet out of my Savage 1:10 twist 24" with 43gr of IMR 4895 and getting 2634 -2675 average of twenty shots with a chrono 10 feet away. Using CCI #24 mil primers, winchester virgin cases and the 175 SMK HPBT, COL mag length.

Check out the Snipershide Reloading forum.  Tons of guys using Varget in there.

You'll end up running 45 to 45.2 of varget in the factory tube fore about 2680 fps.
You'll find the 175 is more accurate at 2600 than at faster speeds.
Above 2700 you'll start to see alot of gyroscopic precession.

I and two other guys are running 43.8 varget behind 190s for 2650fps just for a comparison.  If your rifle will run 190's they'll out perform the 175 and any distance, farther out you get the better the 190's look.

Just chrono some 175's with varget this past weekend using  44g and 44.6 and
recorded avg. speed of 2660 (44g) and 2684 (44.6). No sign of pressure and good
accuracy for both 10 shot strings.

Have also shot 45g of Varget with good results.
Rifle is a FN spr 1/12.

Hope this helps
Trying to keep it in the X-ring

This spring I did a lot of testing with my 308 and these two loads produced .5 "groups at 200 yards with 175 SMK;

Varget 45.0 grains, LC-93 match case, Rem 9 1/2 MAG primer.
Varget 44.5 grains, LC-93 match case, CCI-200 primer.

The cases were neck turned, primer pockets unififormed depth and inside deburred, trimmed to min OAL.

I tested Varget, RE-15 and H4895 with the 175 SMK using prepped LC-93 match cases.  and the following primers;

CCI-200, CCI-250, Rem 9 1/2 MAG, WLR, WLR MAG.

Varget was the hands down favorite of the two closely followed by H4895 (another extreme powder).

IMR4064 between 40-44 grs. You work it up to be safe. If you cant find a load that shoots with this powder try RL 15. If you still dont, sell the gun. Last week I shot a sub 3 inch group at 900 yards with a case full of 4064 and a 175 smk.

Mike, for 190gr SMKs, what twist rate do you need to have?

My 308 has a 21" barrel with a 1 in 10" twist rate.  Will that work?

Thanks

Koshkin, a 1 in 10" will generally work fine with 190s.

Urimaginaryfrnd, I checked Sierra's load for the 175 with Varget and they were pretty conservative...something like 42.5 max. Hodgdon went up to 45.0C. I'd guess working up to 44 would probably do well.
Reaction time is a factor...
