I have an upcoming project AR15 that I could use everyone's thought on. But first let me give some background. I already have a Stag 5.56 carbine in my safe and for now I'm happy with the flip up irons but eventually when money allows it will get a red dot.

I've also had a precision 5.56 (DMR type) AR15 project going. It's based on a 16" White Oak match grade barrel. Unfortunately that upper is backordered until god knows when. I've also planned a 3rd and final (for now) AR15 project in anticipation of a ban on AR sales. I've had my name on a waiting list for a low cost yet handbuilt 6.8 SPC upper from AR15 Performance...

Well yesterday my name came up on the list and they offered me an unexpected option. What was supposed to be a build based on a better than average chromed barrel with roughly military grade or maybe a tad bit batter accuracy is now coming with a lapped and then chromed lined polygonal rifled 11.25:1 Lother match grade barrel with the a DMR-C chamber (the 6.8 SPC equivelent to a Wylde chamber in a 5.56). It'll be here in mid-March. Ballistically 6.8 SPC behaves a lot like a .308 out to at least 500m.  Big Grin

Anyway I hadn't planned to do scope this build but a sub-MOA rifle deserves a scope. Here are my thoughts.
  1. I have a Browning/Bushell 3200 2-7x32 laying around that I can back up with a Troy BUIS.
  2. I also have the Burris XTR 1-4x24 with a Firesight clone sitting in a LaRue mount that I bought for the 5.56 DMR project.
I bought a new hunting rifle just hours before I received the notice that my name had come up so money is tight.  For now it's either option 1 or option 2 unless someone has a compelling reason for me to buy another scope. The purpose is civilian SHTF and maybe some hunting. 6.8 ammo is too expensive for this thing to be a range toy.

We have a month to think on this and I'd like everyones thoughts on scoping the 6.8. Whatever is left over will have to do for the time being when the 5.56 DMR gets here.

Just so you know.  Trijicon is going to be releasing an ACOG that has a BDC for the 6.8.  That might be a sweet way to go.

Is this one of Harrison's guns?
if you, you will love it!
I have an 18" 1 / 11 DMR barrel
1/2" groups are the norm and I have killed a few deer and hogs with it
it frankly gets used more than my Sako 85 270 or Tikka T3 308

I have played around with a bunch of optics, low powered variables, Acogs, etc..
either of the scopes would work
I am going to be running an Aimpoint for stalk hunting and an ill ret 2.5-10 for night hog hunting

It's one of his 6.8 Xtremes, but with the optional Lothar barrel. Quite franky I was shocked when he offered me the option. My understanding was that the Lothars would be reserved for the upcoming Recon model. But hey for only a small upcharge I jumped on the Lothar. I went with the optional YHM 9" lightweight rail handguards. I stayed with the standard YHM flip front sight. I think that was all of the options.

I chatted with him a bit as came away impressed. He's a nice guy with a whole bunch of knowledge.

I have an account there but I rarely login. There just hasn't been enough happening there to bother for at least a month. I use this same ID on there and thefiringline.com (since 1999), mp-pistol.com, rimfirecentral.com and about a dozen others. There is only so much of me to go around. ;)

The ATOG would be awesome but I dont have a grand for a scope right now. I may spring for a second LaRue mount and switch back and forth for a bit though.

Burris has their new AR mounts that look pretty nice as well.  http://www.swfa.com/c-2735-burris-ar-tactical-mounts.aspx

If money is tight and you already have the Elite 3200 sitting around, just go with that, for the time being.

Going forward, I think one of many good quality 1-4x24 scopes floating around would be a good choice.  Depending on the distances you plan to shoot and money you want to spend there will be some widely varying choices available.

Burris XTR is a good choice, although not my favourite (I do not like the rotating eyepiece).

The new Trijicon 1-4x24 is an interesting option.

Also, new Vortex Razor 1-4x24 tactical scope will be coming out this year, and I think it will have good shot at doing a lot of damage in this market segment.

Personally, I would probably hold off for a few months and see what is available then.

ILya, is the Razor glass going to be as good as the trijicon glass?

I only saw a pre-production sample, so it is probably a bit too early to talk about how it compares to Trijicon.

I tend to be cautious with what I say, but the scope I saw impressed me enough to mention it.

The Trijicon is sweet but way out of my price range. At this point I'm seriously thinking about the Leupold VX-III in 1.5-5x20. I'd spend the extra $100 for an illuminated reticle but the one in this model has a horrible reputation for repeated failures in the field. So if I buy a Luepy it will be non-illuminated with either the conventional multi-X or the heavy multi-X, I'm leaning toward the conventional Multi-X.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Just an update. Being a fan of Bushnell's 4200 series I decided against the Leupold and went with the 1.25-4x24 Bushy. My reasons were:
  1. Low light performance
  2. Extreme field of view
  3. Near 1x at the low end
  4. If it's too far away for 4x I don't need to shoot at it
  5. Excellent reviews
  6. Luke warm feelings about the Leupold in this forum
  7. Illumination should I need it
  8. Rainguard
  9. Price

Specifications
Weight (oz): 15

4A w/ Illuminated Dot

Length (in):10.4
Eye Relief (in): 3.3
Field of View @ 100yds (ft): 81.4 - 26.2
Exit Pupil (mm): 15.2 - 6
MOA: 1/4
Lens Coating: Fully Multi-Coated
Warranty: Limited Lifetime

Best of luck.  I just got a Millet 1-4x for the cost.  It should do everything I need, plus I like the circle dot reticle.  Best of luck, in any event.

  1. "I have a Browning/Bushell 3200 2-7x32 laying around that I can back up with a Troy

That certainly seems workable as a temporary fix. My suggestion is you acquire mags and ammo while you can and address the scope later.  I really considered a 6.8 for an "O" build but it was just flat discouraging to think that I would have to put a grand into ammo and mags on top of the upper and optic.  I did order in a place holder type scope recently that would be a good fit  ---

I dont expect it to be anything super like your 4200 but  it doesnt cost a fortune and it can go on any number of things from an AR to a musket.  I do wish I had some LaRue mounts.

Let us know what you think. I've been very curious about that scope but I wasn't sure what its low light performance was like.
