7mm-08 vs 308 vs 7mmMag vs 30-06 (vs 270) vs 7mmSTW vs .300 WinMag... where does it end?  They are all fine calibers/cartridges and if the shooter is anywhere near decent, they will all produce the desired end result of hunting... meat on the table.

7-08 is a fine cartridge.  Meets or exceeds .308 in most areas depending on how it is loaded... but that is the case with most of the "versus" groupings.

I like the 7mm-08, a lot.  Had one for a while for my daughters who did NOT like it (except Nosler BT's 120 grain from Nosler Custom). They liked .243.  Go figure...

I would hunt almost anything with 7mm-08.  As with most firearms, POI is more important than MV/ME.

1. Where are you people shooting?
2. How are we defining "hot chicks"?
3. Caliber, like gun, is largely task-specific.
4. 300WM is where it is at!

Just to refresh myself on why I've chosen to stick with .308 Win I went back and compared ballistics. This is a limited comparison. But it's real world for me. Factors I considered were:
  •  Distances that I'd shoot. I've chosen for ethical hunting to limit myself to 500 yards max.
  • I'm limiting the powder to Varget and only comparing two bullets (the 168-grain Berger Classic Hunter in .308 and .284).
  • I dial corrections over 300 yards

One thing to bear in mind, at least with these two bullets is that the 7mm version is ~.1" longer, diminishing case capacity. As I've mentioned before, I load the .308 bullet to 45 grains. I'd be surprised to get more than 41 grains with the 7mm bullet and still load to 2.81 OAL. Accordingly, I've used 2750 fps MV for the .308 load and 2700 for the 7mm load. I set a crosswind of 10 mph.

Range Drop Windage
(yd) (mil) (mil)
7mm
200 -0.5 0.3
300 -1.3 0.5
400 -2.1 0.7
500 -3 0.9
.308
200 -0.5 0.4
300 -1.3 0.6
400 -2.1 0.8
500 -3.1 1.1

My table only contains mil values because that's all I use. As you can see drops are basically the same. The 7mm-08 gains an advantage on windage as you go out. And, back to real world results, that translates into a 3.5" difference at 500 yards.

No doubt with load tweaking or at longer distances, in stiffer winds, etc. somebody could make the case that the 7mm-08 is superior. In my application it just wasn't enough to justify having multiple sets of dies and brass (and perhaps different powders). If I'd never owned a .308, yeah, I'd start out with the 7mm-08.
Reaction time is a factor...

Upstate New York, any " hot chicks " that like handsome debonair 75 year olds like me, 6,5 Creedmoor will handle all my tasks, Whitetails and Yotes don't need 300 WM''s!!!

In south Texas, our critters are a bit more death averse, I guess. And a large feral hog can hunt you too - and they get meaner still when injured, so I try not to injure them.

Agreed that for many - if not most - 300WM is too much; however, I've never seen "too dead" but have seen "not dead enough."

Maybe it's just me.

Up here in SD where we have big thick skinned dangerous game whitetails and mule deer, we just shoot them with the .338 Lapua....... just to be sure. That sure makes the hot chicks come running!

338 Lapua bulldozers can't stop anything. You need yourself a 45ACP 1911.
No one

In the spirit of full disclosure, I just want to note that I hedge my bets on the hot chicks front by owning at least one rifle in all the chamberings mentioned in this thread thus far, among many others.

...Minus the mighty .338 Lapua. Don't have one of them...yet.
