Appreciate the feedback guys. Sounds like the Bushnells might be a better choice as a field/hunting scope. I'm no varmint hunting expert but I own a Bushnell 3200, a 4200 (not in those powers), and safe full of Weavers. That's a really hard call to make and if we were talking 200yrds I'd say game set and match for the 4200. If we're talking funky lighting conditions, again the 4200 will pull in more light. If we're talking rain, mist or fog - either Bushnell because of Rainguard. But my Weaver V24 has proven to be an awesome range scope and rides proudly on my best custom 10/22. If I were to do it over again that's what would be on my CZ453 Varmint. Again my experience with these is mostly on rifle ranges. This is the scope that I would want to put on it. There is a huge difference in the quality of glass that this scope has. The new model has side focus. Last years model the parallax is on the front and it is about $30 less if it can be found but I would rather have the side focus and the new model. I have one of last years model on a rifle that I gave to my son and it is an absolutely awesome scope - I wish I had a half dozen of them.

Duplex is good 4a reticle is good Leupold varmit reticle or Boone and Crocket are nice but spendy illuminated reticles are nice in low light

I'm trying to decide on a scope to complement my CZ 452 in .17HMR, which I'm using primarily for small critter hunting during fall and winter in Georgia. My budget is not much over $300, and I would l like to have a scope with enough parallax adjustment capability to let me take the close-in shots (50 yards and under) as well as the long shots accurately. I'd also like to pick a scope that gives me good low light as well as normal light performance.
I could use your help in two areas:
1) what's the best reticle for my intended use? I was originally thinking fine crosshair or fine crosshair with a dot, but after giving it more thought, I am concerned that I might have a tough time picking up on the fine crosshairs in the early morning or late afternoon. The alternative is a standard duplex. What are your thoughts?
2) a good scope for what I want to do with this rifle. I've narrowed it down to the following two scopes that are in my price range:
- Bushnell Elite 3200 4-12x40
- Weaver V16 4-16x40
So right now, unless there are other suggestions that I should consider, I am trying to decide on which is the better scope for the money for what I plan to do, the Weaver or the Bushnell Elite 3200. I understand that both of these scopes are made in Japan. What about the low-light performance of these two scopes? I understand from the manufacturer that they both transmit 90%+, but that doesn't tell the whole story.
I'd appreciate any input that could help me make this decision.
