Stopped by a local place so they could gouge me on reloading supplies today. While I was there, I checked out several pairs of bins. I was interested in the Nikon Monarch ATB 8x42s because I'd remembered them being one of the nicer binos under a grand when I'd looked at a bunch last year. Right now there's a $50 rebate to sweeten the deal.

Nikon Monarch ATBs, Vortex Fury, Vortex Viper, and Leupold Cascades were the ones I looked through. They usually have some Razors but didn't. The Vipers had the best resolution, most comfortable feel and eye relief. They also seemed the best built although the focus ring on the Fury was a little better and I actually liked the diopter adjustment on the Fury. The glass on all the rest was virtually indistinguishable as was eye relief. However, the Leupolds have a very difficult diopter adjustment, which I found poorly designed. That's not a big deal if you're not sharing the bins. The ATBs seemed to require a little tighter inter-pupilary distance to get a good view. All in all, the bins in the sub-$300 range left me with the feeling that I'd regret not spending a couple hundred more for ones I'd really like.
