    Posted: June/11/2013 at 15:11
I just bought a pound of Accurate 4064, primarily for my son's 30-06. I was hoping to leverage it as well; but I couldn't find any data on it. It's listed in the Burn Rate Chart only 3 spots faster than Varget, and 2 spots slower than IMR 4064.

Anyone have experience with loading this for the .308? Or am I nutsWhacko

Can you swap it for a half pound of Varget? Wink
If at first you don't secede...try..try again.

Smart move cheaptrick. Very tempting especially considering Varget I tougher to find than a sober photo of Lindsey Lohan.   But I got the Accurate 4064 for only $24. Might just let my son use it exclusively in his 30-06.

I run a lot of IMR 4350 in my .308

I'm going to say this with an important warning: Work up to it first, always checking for over-pressure signs (cratered primers, splits, hard to eject). I've found that the .308 loads, regardless of powder, that have tended to be most accurate were close to max. In the case of Varget, compressed loads. I suspect that's because there's little to no shift inside the case. But again, work up to it. Every chamber is a little different and a semi-auto, for example, would not be a good candidate.
Reaction time is a factor...

What would you recommend for a starting load?

Imho, 4350 is way too slow for .308, but AA 4064 should be pretty good, as the speed range is right in the ball park of best powders for .308. Western Powders (AA) doesn't publish the load data for all of their powders which might work for a given caliber, but they always seem to have the info at hand if you email 'em or give them a call.

In the mean time, you didn't say which bullet you wish to load for, but if 165- 168 gr, 38 gr. AA 4064 should be a good starting point, with military brass.

Just a few short months ago, somebody selling a lb of 4064 for $24 would have been missing sales to his competitors.

IMR 4064 Is what my. 308 likes. Shoots 175mks well and 185 hybrid bergers even better. Lots like It but varget just doesnt work zIn rifle. IMR 4350 Is a good powder for 180gr and up 06 loads. I can tell you this.. while ptobably not being the best load for your particular 308, but If It wont shot a 175 mks with 40 grains of Imr 4064 about. 010 off the lands "well".. then somethings wrong with you or the rifle.

ACC 4064 is used for bullets from 155 gr up to 210. Yes you can. There is some that uses the ACC 2520 that shoots in Camp Perry shoots.

I your opinion would this work equally as well for a semi-auto AR10 type rifle?
