I have 3 Elite scopes of varying types all of which I have been happy with.
I have recently purchased a rifle second hand which came with an Alpen Apex 3-9x40 (42?). Is this scope total junk? I have hardly been able to find anything online about it. The box that he provided had a price sticker of $329cdn on it but that seems pretty high for something made in China. I'm not able to use my level level kit on it since neither the turret cap nor the turret itself are level with the reticle. The construction seems pretty cheap on it. Is this thing even as good quality optically as an elite 3200? Should I just chuck it in the trash? Thanks |

Yes it's junk send to me and I will dispose of it safely. I suggest trying it for a period of time,in todays global market both in manufacturing
and parts add in poor quality control as a whole so most scopes can be a grab bag under $700, if the glass is clear use it on a low recoiling rifle and see how she performs.

As above.
That aside I found this in my old data regarding riflescopes:
We have our products produced in both Japan, and China. The higher end
models e.g. Rainier and Teton are Japanese made. Apex is produced in Japanese owned factories in China. The rest of the products are produced in china. It's mounted on a 30'06 right now.
The only low recoiling rifle that I have at the moment is a 223 but I would like to leave the scope that's on there in place. The market speak for the scope have it at Fully Multicoated but if there's any coating, it must be invisible. If I hold the scope at an angle it seems I can see some of the threading inside quite easily and the glass never has any tint or color to it. I wish I had a more discerning eye to tell what the optics quality is like. I usually don't notice things like that unless I'm calling coyote over a field at sunset and the sun is reflecting around like crazy inside a cheap scope or something... |

I'm not familiar with that model of Alpen. I just picked up a new/used Alpen Apex 6-22X50. Target turrets, side focus. These sell for around $320us, I found this one for $200 and thought I would try it. I compared it to my Vortex Viper 6.5X20 ($400us)and I think the Alpen has slightly better glass (noticeable at full magnification).
Looking at the two side by side they appear to be near twins. The few reviews I could find were positive. |

I'm sorry I'm a bit on the "fundamentalist" side there but if U ask me the answer is YES: just junk. And I will try to strongly discourage everybody to install such kind of things on a 30-06. Also leave your good glass on its 223 ...
If I would have some time to waste I will just like to
a) zero at best possible on the Alpen and then explode a full feuer session with the 30-06: see how it perform and keep in simil-field sit; also maybe have a look trough it in not-so-easy light conditions
b) then do some surgery on the thing: I've observed all kind of surprises on China made things commercialized for the West. E.g.: glass is not glass but transparent plastic, there is no real coating at all, metal is not Duraluman or Avional but normal low grade Aluminium, mechanism has plastic components of ridiculous resilience, some mechanism is pure fake doing nothing inside the thing ... ok enough

I've fired 150+ rounds of 7.62 with My N6 (AR10) and the Alpen Apex 4058, 6-24X50 in the past month. Tracking has been fine and it has better clarity than my Vortex Viper. The eye relief is very good but the eye box narrows up as you get to the higher magnifications. Best $320 scope my eyes have seen. The no paper work needed life time warranty is great, first owner or fourth owner, it's covered. Just like SAI.
It's no Night Force or PST but it is amazing for the price. If you have budget constraints this may be your answer. |
