I recently purchased a Winchester model 70 coyote in 22-250 cal. I was looking for a decent scope to put on it. The three choices I picked were

Leupold VX III 6.5-20x40

Mark 4 4.5-14LR

Bushnell Elite 4200 series

I plan on using this rifle for  target shooting 100-600yds, praire dog hunts, maybe coyote hunting. I don't want to spend a boat load of money, $4-500. I like the high turrets for ease of operation, and an A/O. Any advice would be welcomed. I'm open to any ideas on other scopes out there for what I had in mind. Also what type of rings and bases would you recommend. Thanks in advance. Jeff

for pdogs at 600 yards the cross hairs on the 4200 might not be fine enough. havnt looked through one with the target dot reticle, but you might want to look at a leupold 6.5-20x40 with fine duplex, or taarget dot if nobody get back to you about the reticle.

Since it sounds like you will mostly be doing longer range work a 6-20 type scope would work well (might be a little much for coyotes).  Leupold M1 knobs are the best if you want tall heavy duty windage and elevation.  Here is a picture of the M1 knobs and the standard Leupold knobs.

I think the ultimate would be the Leupold Mark 4 LR/T 6.5-20x50 M1, Illuminated Mil Dot, Side Focus, 30mm.....$959.95  but that is way over your budget.

The Elite 4200 6-24 is awesome but is lacking in the target knob department.  I would go with the Nikon Monarch 6.5-20x44 A/O, Matte Finish, Plex....$469.99  It is in your price range and meets all your requirements.
