A friend handed me a Zeiss scope today - took some photos and did a little checking. It is a Zeiss Zielsechs. Great condition with clear/bright optics. Is there some way to get an approximate date of manufacture based on the serial number? Seems to me that it may be pre-WWII or WWIII production.

Anyone have any experience with these? He wants to put the scope on a hunting rifle - is there a source for the mount that you'd suggest?

Thanks for any information you can provide. I tried to do a search and didn't find anything.

He told me that he actually has another just like this one that he'd left at home. Big Smile

Welcome to the OT.  An honor to have you aboard...

Sir, not meaning to be disrespectful... but when exactly did WWIII take place???

Sorry, couldn't help myself...

That one is outside my experience, but certainly looks interesting.  Just another indicator of the quality of Zeiss optics.  I'm certain one of our "historians" will chime in soon.

Thanks!  I saw the error and couldn't figure out how to edit my post...and knew someone would poke me. Big Smile

Of course, given what's happening in Ukraine right now, WWIII might be on the horizon. Wink

This scope intrigued me. He actually has the original manufacture tube it was sold in.  It has no military markings on it. The only other marking I found was the number 166 stamped on the bottom of the front claw.

Most of my stuff is MILSURP - and all of my optics so far are Soviet. I enjoy competing in Vintage Sniper matches using one of my Soviet M91/30 PU sniper rifles. They may only have a 3.5X magnification but you can still be pretty accurate at 1000 yards with good ammo and some practice.

It's a zielsechs Carl Zeiss Jena most are a 6X. I found one that has serial # 6874 that was made in 1923 0r 24. This scope was used originally by Germany as a sniper scope on the 98 Mauser. I have a Zeiss Jena from 1920. The website I had found the dates of production no longer comes up. What is the serial # of your scope. I will check in on my saved printout.

Thanks - you can see the scope serial number in he last picture. It's 7776.

Any ideas on where I could get the mounts to be able to put it on a rifle?

This will be somewhere around 1927 + or -. The list only keys every 5 years. If I can find it online again I will post the link. The old link is kaput.
