Best Aoudad I'll ever shoot. Worst hunting injury of my life.

My cousin and I hunted almost 2 hours north of Del Rio, Texas, for free-range Aoudad. We definitely found them, and they were thick. I was fortunate enough to take a 35.5" ram. My cousin took one that was 33.5" but carried the mass all the way to the tips.

My cousin hit his animal twice in the wheelhouse with a 300 Win Mag. We knew it was down, but we had to look for it. Our guides drew their pistols, and all of the sudden my risk assessment went from focus on my footing to not wanting to get shot with a pistol or gored by a wounded Aoudad. In less than a second, I slipped on a rocky surface and heard the snap. Broke my fibula in two. Ripped the connective membrane all the way down the long axis of my leg and blew out the entirety of my ankle. Spiral fracture. Doc said it was a "Maisonneuve Fracture." You know you're in trouble when they've named the injury.

After putting two long screws through my leg, I spent four months non-weight bearing on a lower leg scooter. The doc took out the screws and I've learned to walk again - albeit with a limp.

Be careful out there. It only takes a second to change the path of your life.

I did get a kick-ass Aoudad. I'm using the screws to hang the son-of-a-b@#$% on the wall.

What KB said👍.
When you are dead, you don't know you are dead.It is difficult only for others.

It is the same when you are stupid.

Great hunt, bad injury, forever memories.

So what happened with the drawn pistols?
Life's concerns should be about the 120lb pack your trying to get to the top of the mountain, and not the rock in your boot.
