So...I'm a Zeiss guy, Nikon in a pinch. I've seen the spec's on the Konus pro F30 6-24x52. It has every bell and whistle I can think of. It probably has a flux capacitor as well. However, it is Chinese and man, I have never had anything good to say about Chinese made scopes.
Are they pure waste of the $550.00 hard earned dollars I found one for? |

I just acquired a Konus on a .243 XP-100. I placed no value on the Konus in the purchase. It is a good thing I didn't give it any value. It looks good, the green and red lighted reticle work, but that is all. Last week someone complained about the numbers on the Parallax adjustment not matching there eyes. This is not a problem with the Konus because it easily pops off and can be replaced where you want it after every shot. Then attempting to locate the mechanical center of the turrets by tightening all the way in and backing all the way out. After about 4 revolutions you could see the reticle stop moving, but the dial kept turning. After about 15 revolutions I decided that it had run out of threads and was just spinning loose in the housing. No way to really figure how many turns to dial back to find mechanical zero. You mentioned that they have every bell and whistle. Never have a bell, or a whistle been an advantage for accurate shooting. Neither could this example of a Konus scope. This opinion is from the only example of a Konus scope I have ever held. This scope may not be representative of the whole. I will never find out.

I expect that your opinion and experience are exactly correct. I just wanted to kinda sorta find out what it was like to have bells and whistles. I've always been rather conservative in my scope hording. I succumbed to variable mag scopes, then side focus and glass etched reticles. I have no illuminated or front focal plane scopes.
It's just really expensive to find out if you like a certain feature. I'd like to find a high magnification scope that doesn't compare to teh national debt in cost. |

The new Burris XTR 2s are pretty impressive for the coin. They start around $700 for the 2-10x. That is about as cheap as you are going to get with bells and whistles. The 2-10x does not have illumination by the way even though Burris's site and other sites say so.

Illumination is really only a benefit in low light, right? How low a light...like dusk or heavily overcast? Or is it just worthless for full daylight shooting?

For the most part yes. I never use it in full day light. I don't really understand why people think they need it in day light. Just a fad IMO.
I do get it for specific scopes that are designed to be used in daylight for 3 gun comps and such. But for just plinking and target shooting illumination in day light is not really needed. Dusk, hunting in thick timber, and sometimes when looking into dark areas it is beneficial. Honestly most scope do a terrible job with illumination. It is typically way to bright to use in low light even on the lowest settings. There are only a handful of scopes that do it right so they are usable. |

I don't call the FFP a bell or a whistle. If you are shooting drops and wind off the reticle it makes your dope work at any power setting. I like that.
