Is there any reason not to run Max-50's on a 700P in 308? I know it's overkill but the cost is almost the same as the standard Badgers. And let's be honest, the Badger Ordnance rings of any variety are overkill. I've used standard Redfield style turn in's for years without a hiccup. I'm sure they'd work fine here I just kinda like the look of the beefy Badgers. Also are there any picatinny rails that are notched to fit the loading port more closely than the badgers? From the pics I've seen it looks like maybe the Warnes fit more precisely but I'm not sure. Any opinions are welcome. Thanks in advance.

Alot of guys overkill .... they want to be able to beat bears to death with their rifles .... no they just want very heavy duty ..... usually un-needed in normal useage .

There's nothing wrong with the max .50s but they aren't needed, they will net you nothing on a .308 rifle - and they will limit mounting options due to the extra ring width.
As for whether they are overkill: the first time you experience a ring failure, the circumstances will dictate whether you erred on the side of caution or not. I've had ring failures (dovetails, mostly, which is why I don't use them anymore) and would be severely pissed if I spent $7,000 on a carribou tag and flights and accommodations to Alaskan bush only to have my rifle fail because I spent $20 mounting my $1,000 scope to my $1,000 rifle. Maybe it's just me. |

Have any of you used Near mfg.'s rings or bases? How do they compare to Badgers? They look like they are a little neater or machined more precisely than Badgers. I think they're all stainless.

Near supplies the bases FN installs on the PBR. I have no complaints with mine. I have a set of bases and rings on the way for my M995 project. I'll let ya know about the rings.

Does anyone have any opinion on the best one piece rail? I'm looking at Badger Ordnance, Near mfg and Seekins. I'm sure there are several good options. They're all pricey enough I want to be sure I get the right one for me. I want a base that looks like it precisely fits a 700 short action. By that I mean the length and loading port cut-outs fit well. I am having a hard time finding pictures of the rails installed on guns. They all look the same when you just see a picture of a rail. |

I highly recommend Badger bases. Never used Near or Seekins bases.
