Hello. I recently bought a barska 3-9×42 scope for my new AR. I have only used regular hunting scopes in the past. What exactly is a bullet compensating drum and how does it work? I am trying to figure it out before I go zero the rifle. Thanks for the help.

Generally, a bullet compensating drum is an elevation turret that after zero has preset markings corresponding to the drop of a specific cartridge.

That having been said, the usability of a BDC turret on any given scope is subject to that scopes adjustments being both accurate and repeatable.

If you do a search on Barska products, you will quickly converge on why there are not very frequently recommended. While it is possible you will get lucky and your scope tracks well, it is not very likely.  I have never seen a Barska scope that tracks.

Your best bet is to zero the scope and never touch the turrets again.

It has a better chance of staying zeroed and being usable that way.

Yea i read some reviews that suggested tbe same. I wanted something that i didnt have to turn on and this was what i found for my current budget. So I guess the question then becomes, manufacturer recommends zero at 100 yards for the bdc. After research i believe i would rather zero at 50 yards. Would you suggest this since i will zero and then not make any adjustments?
