I have a new scope coming. I would like advice on what type of base and rings I will need. The scope is a 3 x 12 - 50 steiner military scope with a 34mm tube and the rifle is a Rem 700 308 5r. I would like to keep the scope as low as possible. I will by hunting 0-500 yards and playing around o-?yards. I downloaded the owners manual and it said that the way the scope comes zeroed from the factory, if you mount on a flat base it would shoot high. and then it explained about lowering the point of impact with the zero stop. That doesn't make scents to me if you put a 20 moa it would even be higher yet. So I guess this is a two part question #1 best base and rings to get as low as practical and #2 Why would Steiners zero the scope like that.
Any advice would be appreciated Traildog |

After reading Chris Farris's post at the top of rings and bases, I came up with this.
O.D. 57.7mm/2=28.85 28.85+3mm=31.85mm 31.85-7mm "hopefully the thickness of Badger Ordnance rail# 30606"=24.85mm 24.85mm/25.4=.9783" Badger Ordnance #30614 is 1" I am thinking that is about as close as I can get. Does that sound like a good choice? |

Not exactly. A 20MOA base cants the scope forward, giving back some of the unused "up" adjustment of the total range. Keep in mind that you move the reticle down in the adjustment range tp move the strike of the round up - as in for longer shots. Once zeroed, excluding minor changes, you don't move the reticle up (with the obvious exception of long range zeroes, like a 500 yard zero shooting at 200 yards.) For tactical scopes/applications, most bases are now 20MOA (at least all of mine and all I have installed for others - no reason not to have it) so it makes sense that Steiner would pre-zero (kinda) their scopes for a 20MOA base. All of this to say, bore sight the scope before sending rounds down range.

Well I mounted the scope and the front of the scope is 9mm above the barrel, my math that I did earlier in this thread said it would be 3.355mm high, but I did not have the gun in front of me when I did the math and did not take into consideration that the receiver is higher that the barrel.
Oh well, live and learn, the badger ordnance high 1" rings I ordered were the lowest they had in a 34mm tube. I wanted the best base and rings that's why I went with Badger Ordnance, but I did not get the best for my application. My fault, I should have done more research before I ordered. Maybe Badger Ordnance will come out with some 3/4" high for a 34mm tube. Or may another brand completely. I had bought a Kokopelli accurizing Kit before I mounted this scope and when I put the 2 alignment bars on they were almost 1/16 of an inch off. so I had to lap the rings. After spending that much money on the base and rings I wasn't to pleased. I had read that B.O. were machined so good you would not have to lap them. They lined up perfect up and down but not side to side. I tried loosening the nuts that hold the rings on the base thinking maybe I did not push them far enough forward, but that did not help. I am no gunsmith but I did all in my power not to lap the rings, but I had to. I could have sent the rings back before lapped them but I could not wait, I was to exited to get my new scope mounted. Has any one else had to lap Badger Ordnance Rings? |
