I was really pleased to see that the new Marlin 980S bolt action magazine fed .22 rifle is drilled and tapped for a scope base. Only problem is which base - since no info that I can find seems to indicate any specific part number. The guy at the store thought a Weaver model 45 looked about right - somehow I thought further research might be in order. Marlin's web site says their store has a base but the info in their store only shows one base for all their .22s rather than including the model numbers it will work on. While it is likely that the spacing and curve of the recirver is the same more solid info would be helpful. I was really hoping to find something made of steel like a Warne or Leupold mount but Leupolds new web site is not all it should be and did they put a ring and base chart on the site -- no.

1800-544-8892 Marlin Customer Service says nobody but them has the scope base $10.95 + shipping. My thought is if nobody has it the base it should have come in the box with the rifle- Duh. Think that's my last Marlin I didn't notice at the store but the action is really noisy with a loud click when you open the bolt and another when you close the bolt. I will have to see if the reportedly superior micro-groove rifling makes up for the other failings of the rifle. I was hoping for a highly durable highly accurate .22 so what do you guys have that you are really fond of as far as .22 rifles. I'm sure I'm not the only one out there hunting small game with a .22 or did everybody go to .17hmr.

Ruger 10/22, I have two of them. One with a standard barrel and one in heavy barrel. They are great guns.

I have Savage 93R17's for small game hunting. But I do own a few 22's for plinking. I have a Browning semi-auto Belgian.....oh how sweet! A Browning Lever action...... just plain fun! A Stevens single shot bolt that was my fathers first gun.... he and I killed a lot of "tree-rats" with it!
I had a Marlin Model 983S in 22 mag and I sold it to a friend. Best thing about selling to a friend is you still get to shoot when you want to! I liked it a lot, but not better than my Savage 17's. I can't remember for sure, but I think I did order the bases from Marlin.
