My friend just picked his new `09 Ruger compact in the 300 RCM. Already has his dies, shell-holder, brass and is ready for some reloading.

WE gonna have a `lil chrony contest for speed ONLY, for compact "bragging" rights.

The rules are........... We use the same bullets with the same weight, probably 180 gr. All other components are at our secret discretion. We load em up in 1/2 grain increments and once any pressure signs are seen, then the 1/2 grain reductions from there will stand as max loads and then will be chrony`d.

The contenders;

           300 RCM Ruger compact; 16.5" barrel........his
           300 WSM Ruger Frontier; 16.5" barrel........mine

He has NO clue of the site. He has no computer!!!...........Squeezer gonna use some RL 17!!!....Laugh.....Roll on Floor Laughing

Who ya bettin on boys????????

He will win with the 180 gr. bullets, but not 150 gr. Hornady already did this test with different barrel lengths. The .300 RCM with a 20" barrel was slower with the lighter 150 gr. bullet, but was faster with the 180 gr. Both were hornady SST.

Both the .300 RCM and the .300 WSM had the same barrel length.

I bet it is not rl 17.  I dumped powder out of my lever evolution ammo and it was 2 kinds of powder mixed.  I bet most of their recipes are like that.

Ya, it was surprising when I broke some open.  It had green cylinder powder and black round powder in it IIRC.

The only way they can make money is by doing what they tell us not to. It makes their ammo look better than anything but time-consuming, custom handloads.

......................I`ll do dat!!..........NO cheatin!!!!!!!!.........It`s gonna be awhile before the "shoot off" because we first will both go to the range seperately to shoot, chrony and tweak our top secret maximum loads......Naughty

Like I can do, I don`t think the 300 RCM from the shorty tube can slighty better 2900 fps using the 180 grainer.

so what happens if you lose, and he isn't using RL-17?

...............I doubt very much that`ll happen!......Highly unlikely!.......Besides, I know within 50 fps either way what his best will be. Been doing some homework on the 300 RCM.

Before the "shoot off" comes around, I`ll be ready having done my experiments. I`ll make sure that the reloads that I`m going to use, exceed what I think his will do. RL17 seems to have the best capability for speed in the 300 WSM. At the very least, in order to tie or beat me, he`ll need 2950 fps from a 180. From a short barrel, I don`t think the 300 RCM can do that, with or without RL 17.

My friend will be doing is homework too, but I haven`t seen any RL17 data yet on the 300 RCM............And I hope there isn`t any either!.........Big GrinNaughty

So you have the added advantage of having data for RL-17.  You may have to redo the test after there is data for the RCM with RL-17
