Here is a link that specifically discusses your question.  Also you can check out another forum   24hourcampfire.com...search for user name "snyd" where it is discussed.  I bought the same scope and due to my high cheekbone needed an eyepiece with more eye relief. (I followed Snyd's advice and bought a williams eyepiece).  So if you buy body only, or with a fixed power eyepiece and would like a 20 X 60 zoom eyepiece I'll make you a great deal.
hope this helps
Scott

Pentax's own high-end 20-60x eyepiece would be the most versatile while making the fewest/smallest compromises in image quality. Their high-end fixed eyepieces will offer the hands-down best images.
What if the hokey pokey really is what it's all about?

Thanks

Yes.

Well, sort of.  In the 65mm spotting scope it is a 16-48x.  In the 80mm scope it gives 20-60x. and in the largest 100mm scope it becomes a 26-78x.  It is the Pentax SMC zoom eyepiece. It sells for right at $450.

Even though it only reaches 48x with your 65mm PF-65, it will prove superior to the XF zoom (which is pretty decent in its own right.)

Lucznik,
Thanks for the info on their other zoom eyepiece!  I think the XF 20 X 60 zoom that came with it gives a great image it just didn't give me the eye relief I needed with my cheekbone getting in the way.  I really like the William Optics eyepiece, and it seems to give me a great image and a bit wider field of view.  It only goes up to about 52 X on my 65mm scope, but worth the compromise.
Thanks again
Scott

I have that spotter with an XF zoom eyepiece, which is quite good.  However, the SMC zoom eyepiece is as good as it gets.

I have the 20-60X PF85ED, do I need the SMC eyepiece?  I like "great", but would prefer "as good as it gets."

And, again, thanx for recommending the Pentax, it is a fantastic scope, well worth the money!

You've got me a tad confused.  Do you have the PF-65 or the PF-80?  (There is no PF-85).

Regardless, if you want "as good as it gets" in a zoom,  then you will indeed "need" the SMC eyepiece.

If the current setup is doing what you need it to do, then you do not need anything else.

The SMC eyepiece is better, but whether it is $200 or so better is entirely up to you.

If you already have the XF zoom eyepiece, I would probably be inclined to figure out which magnification level you use the most and perhaps augment your existing setup with one of Pentax' spectacular XW eyepieces.  For example I find that I use ~20x magnification 70% of the time.  In that case with PF65ED, I would get an XW20 eyepiece to add to my ZF zoom.

If you want to get the best possible versatility with a single eyepiece than the SMC zoom is about as good as it can get.
