Tikka stainless composite.  I've bought three of them in the last year and they are all very good shooters.

Remington 700 in SPS, matte or SS, would be my choice for your budget.
I like the accuracy of all of my Remington's and I have never had a problem in over thirty years. The stocks are well designed and they handle and balance well. They also have pleasant lines to my eyes.

I like them all, if you find a rifle in that price range that fits your "style" I'd go for it.  There's really not a bad one out there, even the sub $500.00 rifles from Savage, Mossberg, Marlin, T/C are all decent shooters.  To me it boils down to personal preference, I have my favorites, but I can't say they are better than the others.

I highly recommend the Tikka T3 in stainless composite as well.  It is light and accurate out of the box.  Mine is in a .30'06 and I love it.  I will also say that it is about the slickest action in the business.

I have two Savage Model 11s and they are nice.  Wasn't a fan of synthetic stocks... but I've gotten over that now and kind of like them for my knock around guns.   If you can find a Rem 700 CDL for $600.00, that would be my first choice.... got one for my Son couple of years ago in .270 and it's fabulous!
take em!

I'm with Pyro. At $399 they are a steal. I have owned several, and still own some. One of them was the best shooting rifle I've ever seen. I should have probably kept it.

Don't know if they still make the Vanguard in SS, but if so, that would be my very close second choice to the 700 SPS SS. Just swap out that horrid TG assembly for a PTG unit and you'd have a fine rig by any standard.

I have a Tikka T3 Lite in 270, love it, great rifle, tack driver, very light weight.

I know its a little late, but why not Sako A3 ?  They were clearing them out for what I thought was really low...perhaps a reason, never had the Sako but have Tikka Super Varmint and a Tikka Varmint in 308...both super triggers that break very crisp from factory, well built and finished rifles.  Would assume Sako would be all that and maybe more?
That thing on the left....my old ride, some days I miss her.
