Hi. New to the forum and have all kinds of questions about the best match for a variety of rifles.
Right now I'm looking at the different types of mounts used on the 91/30, and M 44 models of Mosin-Nagant. I prefer to get something that will not require modifying the bolt, so it looks like I'll be needing something that sits further away from the normal sighting position. Something more along the lines of a pistol scope.
I'd also like to know if it's normal to pay $100.00 to have 4 holes drilled and tapped for scope mounts. It seems a little excessive to me.

As you may already know you can get a scope base to adapt to the sight base without having it drilled and tapped. Barska 1-Piece Picatinny-Style Scope Mount Mosin-Nagant M-44, 91  Around 16.00 + shipping. If you go that route I recommend a Burris Pistol Scope 2-7x 32mm Matte around 350.00. Keep in mind that the eye relief may not be perfect. You might consider a shotgun scope instead.  I am currently building a Mosin-Nagant which I plan to drill and tap for a custom base I will probably modify for the task. But to answer you question about drill and tap 25.00 per hole is average for most gunsmiths. That is what I charge if that is the only thing I am doing on a particular job. If there is more to do on a given project I may drop back to 20.00ea. It is not a hard thing to do (most of the time) but it does require precision. I've had to go behind some do it yourselfers and that does get expensive.

Good luck on your project and welcome to the OT.

Thank you Sgt. D for your helpful input. How about the replacement sniper type "drop" bolts handles that are available? How dependable are they? Looks like they could possibly break where the threads end.

i would not use those bolt handles. They are held in place by a single screw. If anything, i find them ugly.
There are several people and companies that make very nice handles, they will sell you the entire bolt body or you can trade in the bolt body. Look for forged and welded handles.

anweis, yeah that set up looks sketchy, and doesn't look like it would be able to hold up.
Could you post links to the sites you mentioned, or tell me how to search for them? I'd like this modification to look as professional as possible,

I know $100 sounds high for four drilled and taped holes, try to think of it as paying to have them be in the right place cause anyone can drill a hole in the wrong place.

I have about a dozen Mosins some modified to the gills and some in pristine conditions.  What mount did you find that requires four holes to be drilled and tapped?

If you decide to do permanent modifications to the rifle, there is really only one mount that is worth it which is made by RSI (Rock Solid Industries).  You have to drill and tap three holes for that one:

If you do not want to modify the bolt, there are several scout style mounts, that attach to the rear sight base.  I've used the one from Darrel in the past with good success.

Lastly, Jmeck mounts require slight modification for the stock, but no metal work and can be used as a scout mount or as a conventional mount.

With bolt handles, just buy a bolt body with a properly bent bolt handle from the Boltman or from RSI, or someone like that.  The short straight bolt handle was designed in the era of trench warfare and set-up to run with the left hand.  For more conventional shooting the longer bent handles work much better and give you more leverage.
