The bullet drop recticle such as the Leupold boone and crocket and the LR Duplex and the Nikon BDC and the burris ballistic plex. What is you take on them? Would it be useful? Or should you just sight you rifle in for about 200 to 250 yards and know you trajectory after that and use holdover?

the only issue i have with these, (i have a ballistic plex) is they can cover your game up at long distances especially if you use them for varmints. they are useful but i guess you need to really look at them and try to decide which one does the least to hinder your view of the target.

Brandon.............For the same reasons as Pyro, I`m not a big fan of BDC`s. I prefer just a simple multi-plex recticle!........On my hunts, along with having my range finder, I always zero my 300 WSM rifle in at 300 yards! Why? Very little guess work for any hold over or hold under even out to 400 yards....... BDC`s are simply a guide and are not an absolute as far as POI`s are concerned. Some people though, have good luck with them. I prefer to trust my own judgement and techniques; my range finder, a 300 yard zero and knowing my bullets trajectory or drop, should a 400 or 500 yard shot present itself!

look at burris's web page and you can see that with each different caliber your poi with each mark in the reticle doesnt hit exactly right at given ranges, i know with my 300wsm at like say 300 yards with a 100 yd zero in i would use like the third mill and i would be like 3" high at 300yds so you still gotta guess some i agree with squeezer on this one a good bit of range time and a rangefinder are pretty accurate as well.

I have two of them ( 1 ball plex, and 1 ballistic mil-dot by burris). Agree with pyro on covering the animal. Other than that, I love mine, especially the mil-dot. |

i cant speak for a mil dot setup cause im not a tac type shooter, i dont shoot long distances anymore since i moved out of wyoming the furthest shot i could take where i hunt know would be about 200yds i suppose so i really dont even need a ballistic plex i bought one for my 300wsm cause i wanted to try burris scopes out, (i was just coming out of loopie rehab) and it was the cheapest model of the ffii i could buy so i did, the scope is ok quality wise but i still like my monarch more.

I was thinking of getting a scope with one but not using it. It would be nice to have it if you ever needed it. I dont need it where i hunt now.

I always apply the reticle for longer range shooting for both elevation and windage, and rangefinding whether it be a ballistic, rangefinding or simple plex reticle. Why guess when u don't have to? The plex post tips of many plex-reticled scopes can provide an excellent tool for rangefinding and downrange zeroing.
I have 6 Burris ballistic reticles, 1 PFI, 2 Leupold, and 2 T.K. Lee systems, and just sent in a 3rd for another T.K. Lee installment. I'd be crying without 'em. |
