When I try to adjust parallax, knob travel is alternately stiff, then looser-feeling throughout travel. Tried it before mounting while holding scope in hands and seemed OK, but wasn't really looking for problem so may not have noticed. Brand new 6-24X 40mm, mounted on a new Model 38 Cooper with Talley Lightweight 1-pc. ringmounts. Note: although SWFA catalog says Cooper 21 and 38 take different product # Talleys, the mfr. lists them as being the same; pulled them off my 21 with a SF Nikon (that combo worked OK) to use on this rifle until the newer/possibly-wrong ones on order for the 38 arrive; maybe there really is only a subtle difference in the two ring style no.'s (although I'm sure it's hole spacing and they can't even be interchanged) and it's creating an alignment problem (?) Not very familiar with the mechanical intricacies of side-focus design, and not sure out-of-alignment rings would even affect operation like this. Would lapping them help? Might try turning the front mount around to get the clamping force farther away from the adjustments. Or is this normal with this scope; I've heard you should always turn the SF knob past your estimated shooting range then back to the "correct" yardage. It was getting too dark to really tell, but it didn't seem like the focus was even changing. Guess the first thing to do is pull the scope and try it unmounted again...
Thanks for any and all suggestions.

Front ring is too tight or out of spec.

Try to loosen it.

I agree with Koshkin.  That's not uncommon if the front ring is too tight or you have ring misalignment.  It certainly wouldn't hurt to lap the rings too, but if the front ring is too tight, that can happen even if the rings are in perfect alignment.

Duh, boy is my face red. Backed off those front screws 1/2 turn and now it's smooth as butter Excellent. Thanks Koshkin and RD; I owe you guys a beer! (After I invest in a scope torque tool.)
