I’m putting together another Prairie Dog varmint rifle. I have a new Savage 12FVSS (22-250) and am leaning toward the Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24x40 scope. There are 3 reticle choices – 1) Multi X 2) Mil Dot 3) ¼ MOA Living in a rural area I’ll be mail ordering the scope and would like suggestions on which reticle option is preferred. Additionally I’ll likely go with Leupold 2 piece scope base and Rings. For the Savage 12FVSS it looks like the Leupold 2 piece scope base in matte is part # 55742. How well does the Leupold matte finish match the Bushnell matte finish? To complete the rifle and scope I’ll add a Harris Bipod HBPSL adjustable from 9” – 13” unit with swivel. Thank in advance for any input!

We get some complaints and returns on the 1/4 moa dot reticle, people saying it is too fine. If you are not used to using a fine crosshair and dot you may not like it as it tends to disappear into the background (works great on paper though). The Mil Dot is great if you know how to use it properly. The Multi-X is the most popular by far.
I would get the 6-24 Mil Dot and a Mil Dot Master.
The Leupold mounts match almost perfectly to the Bushnell. Your gonna have a really nice rig! |

Chris,
Thank you for your input. I did not know about the Mil-Dot Master and it really helped being able to click on the link and see the information. If I go with the Mil-Dot Scope I will definitely get the Mil-Dot Master.
Input from anyone else is appreciated! |

The mil dot version is very nice. I have one and would recommend it whole heartedly. The only downfall is the overall length at 17 inches.

I have used this exact scope with both a mil-dot and multi-x reticle.
I would say even if you don't learn to use the mil-dots, there isn't a down side. The center of the ml-dot is at least as useful if not more so than the multi-x on varmints.
I also agree the 1/4 moa dot and fine cross-hairs disappear on too many types of terrain.
The mil-dot gives you more options for holding off for wind etc. I would say go with the mil-dot. Great scopes the 4200 btw.
