The skinny on my hunt.....

Saturday the 6th 5am.we all (my family uncles cousins ect) loaded up for a 16 hour drive to Michigan. We arrived in Dundee Michigan at 430pm.With restless legs and a sore back side we went to the cabalas and walked around for a while. I was like a kid in a candy store. I only spent a little money. So far so good. We woke up at 7 am and drove the rest of the way to Millersburg Michigan it was about 4 ˝ hours to the hunting ranch. After getting all the gear cloths and settled in off to the range we went with shells and gun in hand. For this trip I took a Remington 300 win mag Nikon 5.5-16.5x44 (from SWFA) with 3 different loads I have worked out. I sat down at the bench and BOOM first shot dead center one inch high at 100 yards. The range master said nice shooting but can you do that at 200 yards. I ask him how much money he had in his pocket. Me being a smart ass and all   he told me enough I told him if I place it dead center at 200 yards it would be in my pocket. He said what ever. Okay so bet was on. BOOM dead center best shoot of my life. He told me I got lucky. Okay BOOM next shoot same hole. He handed me my 10 bucks and off I went for the rest to sight in. So far so good.

Sunday evening we went with out a guide to scope out where we would be and what’s walking around that area. Around 645pm a nice 10 pointer walked in with a few littler friend.w0w this was a nice buck but only 3 ˝ years old. I made Boom sound pointing camera and finger for about 15 minutes. Then all heck broke loose 2  360 class elk walks up and runs all my deer off.

Monday morning 5 am wakeup call arrives. Well I was already awake and ready for some reason I was ready to go. Hunting is my thing I usually can’t sleep the night before and a trip like this no sleep a few days before. So I’m all bright eyed and bushy tailed waiting and ready to go. At 6am we went to a blind called “dog leg” I have no idea why it was called that but soon found out that some one last year had shot a hole in the roof of this blind. But that’s another story. We sat until 11 am and didn’t see anything but 2 elk. The afternoons hunt at the same blind was the same nothing but 2 stinking elk. At this point the guide that was with us was catching hell. We were asking him if he had ever been on the property and if he need to use my glasses and all sorts of stuff. He was a good guy and took all the crap we gave him in stride.

Tuesday morning 4am awake and ready to go. I called the wake up guy and told him to not call us we was ready. He cussed for a few minutes about still having a hour to sleep or something. He is a good guy but you know how smart asses are. We got to the blind at 6 am waiting on day light a few spot out in the field. I was thinking to my self “it’s going to be a good day” well when the light broke the spot were still there it was 5 doe’s. At are 8am 4 buck’s came in and was feeding around for about 15 minutes they were some smaller 1 ˝ year old deer. Well guess what happened then 2 elk ran them off. We decided to get out and stalk and see what we could sneak up on. We saw some great bucks at 400+ yards. the afternoons hunt went about the same some smaller buck and few doe’s and 2 elk. By this time I’m thinking the elk like me.

Wednesday morning. 5 Am. Phone rings I answer it “waffle house” I get a F U and a click… I didn’t know moonshine would make him so grumpy in the morning. ”another story” I laughed and off to the blind we went. Around 8 am a few doe’s cam out and was feeding around then a few 180+ buck was running the wood line pushing each other around sparring getting ready for the rut to kick in middle of November. That was fun to watch. From behind us the woods started to crash. My heart beat ran way up. maybe a shooter buck would step out and make a good day of this. Well that was wishful thinking on my part. It was you guessed it an elk. Right now elk are not my friends……So we went walking again and nothing cam of it. The afternoons hunt was great. We had what looked like 3 shooter bucks about 200 yards away but were waiting for them to get closer to make sure. When an elk ran them off again. I’m really pissed right now about damn elk. Around 7 pm a nice 10 pointer walked (ran past the elk) right to us with in 50 yards. Here goes my guide counting 40 for main beams 20 spread 18+16+14+19=130 +10 inches for base=137. He was counting and adding like no other has ever done before. Now for years my uncle has wanted a perfect 10 pointer for the wall. So I sat back grabbed the camera. They talked it over a few minutes waiting for the buck to turn. BOOM the deer bucked up flipped and fell over. Nice shoot. We walked over and looked at the deer and the guide about crapped him self. He was measuring with his hands and kept coming up with 145 scoring points. The limit we had was 140. After all was aid and done the deer scored 139.All was happy.

Thursday morning hunt. The temp dropped from 60 to 30 in the morning. It was a nice cold crisp morning. the sun broke the tree tops around 7am.the field we was watching had 6 doe’s and 4 small 4pointers and spikes. This field was 17 acres so it was a big field to say the least. I got a nudge and across the field a buck a buck was all I heard. We watched it rub same trees and play with the doe’s. Then all of a sudden it ran straight to us and about 100 miles an hour. We whistled grunted and everything we could to get him to stop. after he ran across the field by us and thru the woods we looked up and guess what we saw. Yup elk 2 of them. The afternoon hunt went great I got to see some more elk and a few smaller buck’s but the wind was blowing like no other and they just wasn’t moving at all.

Great story, BD. Sorry you didn't connect though.

It's always been about the quality of time spent when hunting for me anyway.

This is a white deer. It's not albino but white. There was 2 more on the property.one had a 11,000$ price tage on it.The B&C score for it was over 180.A white deer is a neat thing to see walking thru the woods. It is harder to pick out than a brown one.strange huh.
