What's the best treatment to clean out an old ancient barrel bore?

Ed, i think you are familiar with Ed's Red, which is a mixture of transmission fluid, kerosene, acetone, and i don't know what else. You already know that soaking a bore in Kroil will remove 1000 years of grime, but here is something to think about:
If the bore is ancient, it may be better left alone, if you want to shoot it. Some ancient rifles shoot just fine as they are, if you clean the bore you clean out the pitting and whatnot, and the bore may not shoot well anymore, for quite a while. You can soak in Kroil overnight, brush and patch, polish a little with JB bore paste, patch clean and dry, and hope for the best. |

So...the Moral of the Story is don't get involved in ANCIENT CIVIL WAR dirty bores!!
I'll keep my gun-buying to the 1920s and above......

i had a .22 single shot bolt action with a dark ugly bore. It shot 1.5 inch groups at 50 yards with any ammo i tried. I cleaned the bore shiny, i found a lot of pitting and frosting not visible before, it did not shoot anything anymore, for more than 500 shots. After a lot of carbon and lube filled the pitting and the rough spots, the rifle shot well again. I've had this experience one way or another with 6 or 7 old rifles.
If i want to shoot them, i leave them dirty, especially if they are from the period of corrosive mercuric primers (1880-1920) ; if i want to sell them i clean them and make sure the buyer knows what they get, i even tell them the rifle may not shoot until it's really dirty again. On a Win 94 with black bore and no rifling visible,, made in 1905, i could keep hunting ammo from Walmart into 1" at 50 yards. I cleaned it shiny. I found a nightmare of pitting, frosting, tool marks, scratches, etc, and just 6 inches of rifling at the end of the barrel. That rifle never shot again, and it still doesn't, as far as i know.

Anweis!! Don't go anywhere!! You are a fountain of information! I have been needing to replace a couple of Model 94s that I don't have anymore....and lots of sellers say stuff like BORE DARK, etc. and I have been wondering what to do.
I used to have an ancient 25-35 made in 1900 that shot just fine with the old barrel...but, I was wondering if I should clean one up or not worry about it if I bought another old one.... I think I'll split the difference and stay away from the Ancient Period..... ( But, I do want Pre-War----or a Flat Band...I just don't want one of the mid-twenties to early thirties models that don't take bluing on the receivers due to strange steel....) [ I saw a gorgeous 1954 Model 94 25-35 a couple of months ago---like new---for $1100---but, I was spending money fixing up my daughter's Jeep and it got sold!! ] I know where there is a 1925 Saddle Ring 25-35 for sale........
