A couple years ago my daughter showed me a pic of a pistol she liked and said "if you ever feel like building me a gun this is something I would love". It was something like this.
Spent quite a bit of time lookin a good candidate for a custom overhaul but over time felt that it was too limited to what I wanted to do. She and I are huge Beretta fans and I know that is one reason she picked a Beretta. Long story short. Recently got chance to pick up a 1911 80% lower and being a huge fan of the 1911 also, felt it was a better choice. I could be more involved in the whole custom project. Found a good deal on a Rock Island parts kit and started fitting everything together. Had to mill the slide guides and drill a few holes. Then had the slide on and was able to start fitting the trigger, sear, hammer and safety. Meanwhile tracking down someone to do the engraving on the slide. That is one talent I wish I had but unfortunately I don't. Her birthday is Dec 27 and by first of Nov still hadn't found anyone that A. I could afford and B. could get it done in a couple weeks. Finally found a shop near Ft. Bragg that was doing laser engraving. Great people and quick to get onboard. Got the slide to them for a quick turn around. Mean while I am getting experience with my first attempt a anodizing because the lower is milled aluminum. and nickel and gold plating for the custom furniture. Got the slide back and got the gold inlay done easy and quick and started on the gold plating. Everything went pretty well except the trigger and mag release didn't want to take the plating. Had to clean a re-do three times before I finally had it close to what I wanted. So here are some pics of where it is today. Gave it to her on the 27th but told her it wasn't hers until I was happy with the finish and function. So if all goes well she will get it to keep this weekend. Built the box for it aswell. It is all oak with burl walnut veneer. What do ya think?? The gold finish isn't as clean and bright as I hoped but for my first run at it I have to accept it (for now). Funny how the camera picks up the finger smudges so well.

Yeah, me too. But honestly, by choice. Put the kids first till they were gone. But it seems rescue was required twice so far....
LOL, always seems to happen right when I'm about to make a playtoy purchase....

I've been on the look out for a 14-20 Foot boat with enough gunnel to survive the northern Chesapeake Bay as well as my local lakes....

That is a beautiful 1911 Sarge, and your daughter will be very proud of it.
And who cares what the wanker thinks.

Thanks!!
I'm glad that I went with the 1911. It is classic and classy. The Beretta is a great utility functioning masterpiece but not quite as easy to "dress up". Polished the sear and hammer today and changed the hammer spring. Trying to get a 3lb. pull. I'll shoot it tomorrow and see how it does. Shot it today and was very pleased with the group and the fit and feel. The lighter cleaner trigger should make it all the better. Doing one for myself next and expect it will shoot as good. Mine will be less the gold and bright grips but the same in ever other aspect. Probably be my carry piece for awhile.

Got one of these about 6 yrs ago. Incredible out of the box. I highly recommend for the $ can't be beat. I have a 92 Beretta that I did a good amount of work to get to competition status. This 1911 shoots a tad better with no work. Who-da thunk??? Rock Island Armory Rock Standard

I guess I can't talk. I too have a Rock Island 1911A2 in 9mm. It's a great pistol. I do need to find a standard size thumb safety for the right side, and a thicker grip safety. Then it would be perfect for me. I got it new for a lot less than MSRP.
