Looking for advice as to what scope would fit my needs for a Remington 870 Express Magnum slug gun.  I have been shooting this gun with a Vari X 2-7-28 compact out to 100 yards with 2 3/4 slugs and getting great accuracy.  I think it could be effective out to 150 yards but can't seem to get a great group with the 2-7x28 @ 150 yards.  Would also like to have have a scope suitable to shoot out to 200 with 3" slugs if my shoulder is able to take the abuse.  We are loosing a lot of land here for rifle hunting and numerous counties are going to shotgun only.  Any suggestions would be helpful.  Thanks in advance.

Failed to mention that I am using Luepold Q1 Remington base with Leupold rings.

I'm not sure if it's a scope issue, I'd try several other brands of slugs, also make sure your rings & bases are secure.

Thanks for the reply, base and rings are rock solid.  This gun seems to group the best with the Remington copper solid slugs.  I've tried 3 others and none shot as well as the copper solids at 100 yards.  Maybe I'm just looking for too much out of a shotgun, but really think that I could kill deer with it out to 150, maybe I'm wrong.

If you are getting great groups at 100, but not at 150, the problem is certainly not the scope or the mounts.  The slugs are probably just not grouping well at the greater distance, and the best scope in the world wouldn't help much.
Try Brenneke slugs if you have a smoothbore, or try a rifled barrel with various Sabot-slugs.
Also, you might want to think about a black-powder rifle to extend your range if local laws allow them.

Ronk nailed it ... I have had really good luck with the same loads you mentioned, and also Hornady's SST"s ...
On days when I sit in a stand with shot possiblities past 150 yd.s, I take my 50 cal BP Encore ( with it I can stretch out to 225yds  )

Barrell is rifled, I will give the Hornady's a try.  Local law does not allow muzzle loader during gun season, only shotguns in the particular county I will be hunting in, passed that law a couple of years ago.  I guess due to the greater accuracy of the modern smoke poles.  Thanks for the info....

I have also had good luck with the copper solids, the newer faster slugs from hornady, federal and others don't shoot as well in my mossberg 695 slug gun, I think the rifling is not correct to stablize the newer, faster slugs. My gun also likes the 2-3/4" slugs better than the 3" slugs and so does my shoulder.

I'm not up to date on the specifications of the various slugs you are using or planning to try, but back when I used to shoot slugs, we found that rifled barrels were far more accurate with sobot slugs than they were with Foster-types. I had a long, heavy Hastings rifled barrel on an 870 that was very accurate out to about 150, which was as far as I ever tried to shoot it, when using sabots.  With Fosters, my Dad's smoothbore slug barrel shot at least as well as my Hadstings did, 75 yards was  pushing it with most brands, if I recall correctly.  I wish I had been more scientific with my testing and had kept notes back then.

It ain't your optics sir,  I'm assuming your shooting 1 oz. sluggers out of your 870. They are great to 100, but pretty much fall on their face past that. I shoot them at milk jugs at 100 & hit every time. ( That's out of my smooth bore of course ).

As far as 150 yds, get a bolt shotgun & go 200 +.  A friend of mine blew my mind with his at 200. It's every bit as accurate as an inline muzzle loader at that range.

Was that a rifled barrel with sabot slugs?
