......................Are you sure that you want a 338 Win? What about the recoil that you didn`t like with your 300 WSM? Seems to me that even with any extra rifle weight, a 338 Win. will have as much if not more recoil. You know that you`re going to load the sucka up to the max don`t you???.............In my new `08 Hodgdon reloading magazine, from a 338 Win. its MV from a 24" tube using a 225 gr. Hornady SP goes anywhere from 2642 fps. to 2832 fps...............A 180 gr. Nosler BT is from 2972 to 3157 fps.........A 200 gr. is from 2784 to 2979 fps............A 250 gr. comes in from 2401 to 2564 fps. All are from the max. column!..............Better do a calculation on recoil??Heavy%20RecoilCrutchWe don`t want you to get a 338 Win. and then post up complaining about it`s recoil!!!!................Roll%20on%20Floor%20Laughing That would be hilarious!..............Oooooh!.......THAT SMARTS!!!

the kimber has a 26" tube so you can inflate the fps a bit, i wouldnt shoot anything heavier than a 225 any way, its over kill for white tail as it is, the last time i shot a .338 win it was a m 700 bdl composite stock ss action and barrel i shot 225gr bullet that the owner had loaded up with a pretty stiff charge of r-22 and i didnt think it was any worse than my 300win mag really.

....................I still really don`t see how you`re going to escape with less recoil than a 300 WSM!!!!...That Kimber is not the heaviest piece!

i just ran the recoil calc and im only looking at 35ftlbs with the .338 with a 225gr bullet my 6.3 lb 300wsm with a 180gr bullet made 38ftlbs, its was 1.1 pounds lighter the bullet went faster so a 3ftlb difference could make or break the deal?? guess we will see, l know that the remington i shot was a half a pound heavier than the rifle im looking at but i still know i can handle it, the win mags push more, the wsm's and ultras are more like a sharp kick, big difference in felt recoil

with your loads i got 34.5 ftlbs on the 200 gr and 30.42 with the 180gr and im only figuring rifle weight, not scope and rings and bases with the loads in my rifle it was 37.20ftlbs, because my rifle was a half a pound lighter and i used more powder to get to that 3000 fps number than you

Hey pyro

I have had a 338 win mag for a couple of years now.  Have a 300 win mag in a Beretta Mato so when I had a chance I found one in 338 win mag and jumped on it.  Identical rifles and after a few months of shooting the 338 win mag it was giving my old shoulder a workout (I can shoot the 300 win mag all day, no problem).  So I put a muzzle break on it.

It was a lot easier on my shoulder.

I shot a lot of 225 and 210 gr TSX's, 225 and 200 gr Accubonds.  In order to try and get the velocity I wanted I always had to go over max and never really got there.  With the 250 gr bullets the bullets would start taking up case room and I would really have to start compressing powder.  Had a case head separation and decided that pushing the envelope was not the answer.

So now I am sticking closer to book max and pushing the 210 gr TSX at 2885 fps and the 225 gr Accubond at 2730 fps.  Now many would say that is plenty and what's the problem?  I just expected more. Roll%20Eyes

If you get a fast barrel and push hard you might do better.  I am contemplating getting the rifle rebarreled to 338RUM.  Load that caliber down to a medium load or lower to push a 210 gr bullet at 3000 fps which is where I want to be.  By contrast the 300 win mag has always exceeded my expectations.

i just checked  the hodgdon web page and the 200 gr load in the .338 will give me the same recoil numbers as your 200 gr load for your 300wsm, so you tell me whats a surprise??
