I have had a Savage Tactical in .308 (no Accutrigger) on loan for about a year from my uncle. Lucky me it has become permenant!

Now to replace the BSA contender 6-24-50 that is sitting on top as of now.

I do not shoot generally beyond 500 to 600 yards. The gun will be used to punch paper or possibly varmit hunt. I am no longer in the military so I do not have to worry about going to play in the sand box.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a good fixed 10x candidate.  Since your sub 600yards, you really don't need to invest in a 30mm tube.

BSA makes only toys for childs airguns, change it !!!. My favorite american at low medium price are burris signature/black diamond and the leupolds vari 3/ long range/mk4. Best price-cuality euro are meopta, zeiss conquest(assembled in USA) and docter. Good luck-.

300Rem7,

Is Savage Tactical accuracy up to the quality of optics being proposed by ots03? What is your opinion of the savage tactical vs. the rem 7 or other similar varmit rifle?

Oh yea. The Savage 10FP in .308 can hold sub-0.5MOA with match ammunition out to atleast 400yrds.  My only gripe on the 10FP is the factory Savage stock.  Opt for the McMillian. Once you pay extra to get a stock on par with the HSP, I think the Rem LTR/PSS is a better base value.  Which one is more accurate is akin to the old "Ford/Chevy" argument. They both hold sub .5MOA with the right ammo and shooter.

I like the locking bolt safety that Rem does not offer and the AccuTrigger is great once you get used to the sear block.

A pro of the Savage is that you can build a more versitile weapon as the barrel-nut allows barrel swaps in the field. A short head-spacing exercise is required.

Once I replace the stock and trigger I would say yes. A 1000yrd gun... I really could not tell you.

As far as comparing the 700pss to the tactical, the 700 has a better stock from the factory hands down. For what I paid for this toy ($0) I can put some money in her and come out ahead... way ahead. If I was looking at buying I would most probably go with the remington just because the parts are easly to find and configuration would be so easy.

I agree with boom I do like the idea of being able to twist off a nut and change to another chamber.

I know I'm pretty late on this but look at the Ultimate Sniper Stock Choate and Tool stock.  I put one on my Savage 10FP .308 w/ AccuTrigger, along with a SS10x42.  Very easily 1000 yard gun.

Mithran,

better late than never...

I am looking for a used McMillian or H.S. stock for mine along with a new trigger and a SS10x42.

Check out the Choate stock designed by Major John Plaster.  It's sold in the Delta Force catalog.  It's so comfortable, very easy to custom fit to you.  I paid about $190 for it.  They make them for Remington 700's Winchester 70's and Savage 10FP's.  Left handed like mine and right.  Green or black as well.  Uses dual aluminum pillar block bedding, very secure.  My rifle weighs about 12 to 13 pounds so recoil isn't a worry and still light enough to hump it.  Free floats the barrel, uses a Aschutz style T rail  with swivel stud in front for mounting a bipod.  Actually if you have two bipods of different heighth along with two rails which they sell, you can quickly switch lengths.  Foot screw if you want it and swivel studs on either side of the buttstock and in front of the foregrip.  Also has a SVD style off hand hold hole in buttstock.  Take a look at it.  Don't mean to trying to sell non SWFA products on this forum but this is my recommendation.

im going to back up Mithran on this one, the ultimate sniper stock is a nice scope for the $$, but can be had for new for a helluva lot less than 190, you can get them for 130 shipped, brand new, but if your willing to spend the money for the mcmillan, or HS, certainly do it. i dont know if it will fit, or not, but ill have a HS stock off of a 700P SA for sale at the end, or beginning of next week.

Unfortunately, the HSP 700P stocks won't bed a Savage action, even with significant work.  To bad, there are a ton to be had by shooters who upgrade to a AICS or a McBros.

Another option is picking up a used wood laminate 12BVSS stock and having it bedded.  This stock will definitely outperform the synthetic Savage stock and is about your lowest cost option.

Pretty impressive... I am not sure about the bu*t end of the stock. Wish it was one of those things where I could try before I buy, but for the price it is almost worth just buying and trying.

Boom I like your idea as well. thx
