I have a flattop AR/M4 and would like to get some feedback on the best mounting arrangements available. There are obvious clearence restrictions caused by the barrel handgaurd. Do I need - or is it recomended to use both a flatop riser and hi-rise mounts for a 50mm objective scope? I am looking at the Nikon 6-24X50 (1") or a Leupold in similar range.

Look at this too:
Those here know that I am no fan of Leupold, they make a good scope at a not-great price, better deals can be had. The Bushnell is a good scope at a good price - and if you decide you don't like it, ship it back to Bushnell for a 100% refund. As for mounting, you gotta answer the scope question first. What will you be doing with the setup? What is your max range? Will you be shooting in low light? What is your budget? What is your experience level with optics and ARs? |

Welcome to The OT!! I use this setup with low "tactical" rings and a 4-16x Nikon Monarch on my AR.
The riser mount is from Weaver. Inexpensive and probably not bomb proof, BUT it works pretty well for my range queen AR.
Here's a pic of it.

general rule is dictated by cheek weld, which depends if your using a collapsable stock or a magpul (adjustable) --- get the leopold.

I like rings that are about 1.5 inches high from the base to the center of the ring. I think that gives you the perfect cheek weld for an flat top AR. That is unless you have the adjustable magpul stock like Dale mentioned.
I have these on my scope and have used them on several other ARs I have built for buddies and they are very very good rings in my experience. http://www.swfa.com/pc-6521-123-arms-22h-throw-lever-30mm-rings.aspx They only come in 30mm though. These also have a very good rep. http://www.swfa.com/pc-11580-1783-warne-ar15-flat-top-aluminum-1-rings.aspx they are a little higher, but should still give you a pretty good cheek weld. |

If you get either of the rings I mentioned I think you will be fine clearing a 50mm scope.

LaRue Tactical makes the best mounts for optics on an AR. I use their LT-150 on my police carbine with an Aimpoint.

Ultra high Warne rings should work.

Muddogs,
Rancid makes very valid points. I might add several more: What type of handguards? Where do you plant your beak? You shoot NTCH or farther back? You going to us a BUIS? Pic of my RRA Entry Tactical w/Burris FF II Tactial 2-7x35. Armalite mount with a YHM Rail Extension. I removed a small amount of material from the front of the extension so the it can be moved forward quite a bit more. Hope this helps. |

most people prefer the scope mounted further forward than a standard ring setup allows the scope to be. you can do that with a larue or ADM type QR mount, a small riser with some forward rail out 2-3" and a set of rings, or a fixed type forward mount I think the best is the JP enterprises mount. I have had all 3 setups.. the larue is tops if you want to be taking the optic on and off and want to maintain zero. a riser and a set of rings is the most affordable and you can switch from 1" to 30mm with just a ring swap, the JP is very light and very well made, just lacks the QR functionality

Get the riser blocks and go with the Nikon with the BDC reticle. With a little practice and a 165 grain BT Hunting bullet you will be knocking them down on out there using the BDC reticle.

Sorry, I was thinking AR-10, thats why I suggested the 165 Gr Pill. Still I would use the Nikon with the BDC reticle, you can work up formulas for the .556 with a little practice using the 55gr bullet and on up and down the various weights with the Nikon BDC.
