Squeezer Commemoratives
I swopped out the 2-7x32 3200 Elite that was on the AR on the left to a Blackpowder Kodiak I recently got . The AR is a 7.62x29 Colt 16 incher, that shoots Corbon's 150 gr rounds at 1.5MOA ( sometimes a little better) . Time to put another scope on it . I am on disability for a while for a while for knee recon and don't have the funds just yet to get something new. So - my selection is limited to what I have on hand or could swop around..
1) 4200 Elite 3x9 ( low enough bottom end magnification ? ) rainguard is nice
2) Pentax Whitetails Unlimited 2x5 w/ twilight plex reticle
3) recently discontinued Browning 2-7 nib ( actually pretty nice)
4) Vari xIII 2.5-8 ( generic duplex )
5) Could swop out another 3200 Elite 2-7 . Got one sitting on a 22 mag stainless that no one has shot in a while , but it's sighted in just right.
6) 3200 Elite 3x9 ( a "reserve" scope I have sitting around)
7) prev generation Monarch 2-7x32 ( if only it had rainguard )... like it though (off the stainless 336 in the picture , and I would stick the Browning or Pentax on that )
It is my lightweight deer drive gun ,or if the weather turns nasty and I am out just meandering the woods-I'll generally take it .Wouldn't go past a 150 or 200 yd.s shot with it , but it makes a nice "semi auto 30/30 ". Which one would you use ?

Personally I think you need an aimpoint for it.

Since this rifle is a short to moderate range 100 to 200 yard timber gun, I`d go with the faster aiming 2.5x FX2 Leupold.
It has a better FOV than the larger belled scopes, it is very simple and it is an extremely light weight scope as well.
Realistically and for your use, you certainly don`t need anything beyond a 2.5x.
There ya go!!!...........

From the stuff in your list, I would probably go for the 2.5x25 Pentax. It is a nice little scope and for the ranges you need it will work like a harm.
If you want to shoot groups a bit more, then just put you Browning scope on it. ILya |

Plus 1 and 2 on Wes and Big Squeeze for the Aimpoint recommendation.
Especially on a deer drive with shots at running deer inside 150 yards. Aimpoint Micro!!

I think he has very specifically said that he can not get anything new right now. Besides, I am not convinced that an Aimpoint has an advantage over a low magnification scope for his uses. He is not clearing houses with his rifle. A thick reticle in a low mag scope is a pretty good way to go, IMO.

Having been on more than a few deer drives in my day, I can attest to the value of having a fast aquisition reticle like an Aimpoint for shooting deer that are generally running. FWIW.

Makes sense.
He stated that the shots were out to 150 yards, so I suggested low mag scope rather than a 1x. ILya |

Sure.
I used a 12 guage shotgun with slugs (Iowa).
The way we hunted deer with drivers and blockers and in the terrain we hunted in, we had to make fast shots on moving deer when they "flushed". Very exciting way to hunt deer, IMO.

Deer drives have always been fun for me..back when I was younger, We would have upwards of 20-25 guys and would cover huge stretches. The action was always fun. We'd sometimes push out as many bear as deer. I was leaning towards the Pentax 2-5 x 20 personally. The twilight plex reticle really jumps out at you, and the optics are quite clear.

I have shot at a few critters myself with my Aimpoints. They are not very good for hunting at game in any light and 100 yard+ ranges IMO.

I'd go with the Pentax. For that caliber and purpose it's perfect. 2x for the drive and you can move up in power if you spot someting in distance and/or need to find a hole in the brush.

I would agree with the 2.5 for now. if the rings are set up right (ie QD), he could in theory swap out for longer shots or target shooting.
