Burris Xtreme Tactical Scope
XTR-14 1-4x24

State of the Tactical Arts
The new XTR-14 1X-4X riflescope features the innovative XTR Ballistic 5.56 Reticle. A true 1X optic, it is shown matched to XTR Rings and a FastFire reflex sight, which is an offering in this fully-assembled configuration (ideal for M4’s and AR15’s #201903). It covers the tactical bases from entry work to long- range counter-sniper duties.

BURRIS XTR BALLISTIC RECON RETICLE

Calibration set at 4X magnification.  All measurements are subtensions at 100 yards at 4X magnification.  Calibrated to a .223 62gr FMJ at 3025 fps @ 1000’ altitude.

Center Dot 1MOA.
Circle Inside 6MOA.
Center of Circle Perimeter = 1 Milradian.
Tick Marks = 1 Milradian apart center to center

NEW! The propietary HiLume ultra-clear, index-matched multi-coating used on XTR Riflescopes has been enhanced with new StormCoat.
The ultra-low-surface tension coating causes water to form into tighter beads and slide off the glass, leaving more “clean” surface through which to clearly see your target. The enhancement is exclusive to XTR scopes.

6 months ago, I was dead set on the Leupold Mark 4 CQT, but after seeing this post, I'm seriously considering the Burris for the slight price advantage, red dot combo, and 4x vs 3x.

Does anyone have any opinions on Leupold 1-3x14 Mark 4 CQ/T vs. Burris 1-4x24 XTR 30MM?

It is for my Rock River AR15 and will primarily be used for hunting with a majority of shots within 50 yards and max distance to ~250-300yds.

the reticle is almost identical to the cqb on the ior -- except the partial doughnet is larger on the ior and which after using "hides" bullet strikes for use as a hunting or a can gun. the semi doughnet works best on something like steel or IPSC targets which is what it was designed for. this has bdc holdover and for a 4x on an m4 type past 400 yds is like the proverbial "luck on prom nite". -- but if the glass is better than fullfield II

as a side note-- the drop or ballistic profile for 62 gr, military in an m4 is almost the same as 168 gr 308 factory match. same to markings to 350, 2.5 moa, same to 550 or 5 moa, but the 223 starts to drop off faster after that.

Like the Burris Xtreme Tactical Riflescope (XTR) the Leupold Close Quarters Tactical (CQ/T) was purpose built to sit on top of a flattop AR-15.

Both scopes offer a true 1x magnification which is very important because it allows the shooter to keep both eyes open, using your peripheral vision to spot targets to your left and right.

As you noted the Burris uses a 4x erector that allows the magnification to be increased by 4x it's originating power opposed to the Leupold's 3x erector.  This added magnification is an advantage if you will be shooting beyond 200 yards.

Both scopes offer an illuminated circle dot reticle for quick close range shots.  The Leupold Mark 4 CQ/T reticle can also be used for range estimation.

The Burris Ballistic Recon reticle can be used for bullet drop.

The Burris utilizes a 24mm objective vs. 14mm on the Leupold which creates a larger exit pupil and sight image which makes the Burris faster and easier to look through.

The Leupold mounts directly to the flattop or carry handle with no additional mounting hardware required and has the availability of a quick release solution from A.R.M.S.

The Leupold uses one single AA battery which makes it easy to steal a battery from other gear if needed.

The Leupold also provides additional picatinny mounting surfaces for additional gear and is mil-spec and has been battle proven.

If you take price into account, the Leupold is over $300. more which is hard to justify.

The glass on it is actually quite good: on par with the better Burris scopes, like Euro DIamond, etc.  Definitely better than the FFII.

It is a nice and user-friendly scope.  One thing that I am mixed on is the fact that when you change magnification the whole eyepiece assembly rotates, so Butler Creek caps are not a good option.  On the other hand, if you need to change magnification quickly you do not need to fumble for the magnification ring: just grab the eyepiece and rotate it.

I liked the reticle and the illumination worked well in low to mid light.  I do not think it would be very visible in bright light.  Eye relief is about constant and fairly flexible even at 4x.   Without illumination the reticle would probably be a bit too thin for low light (I would prefer a thcker horseshoe, personally).  Still, with the illumination it should work exceedingly well.

Between Leupold CQT anf Burris XTR, I think Burris offers a more versatile solution.  CQT may have a slight range at close range (I think the illumination is brighter and battery life is longer).  However, lack of trajectory compensation reticle or BDC on the CQT makes longer range shooting more complicated.  Also, when I played with the CQT, I thought that the center dot was a bit too big for precision shooting.  Once the range extends, I think Burris XTR runs circles around the CQT while it does not give up too much in close range.

Try the IOR, 1-4x.  It has pretty much the same reticle, and will have better glass than either of those.

I've got this scope on order minus the Burris rings. I'll add the fastfire adaptor when funds allow. I wanted quick release and the Burris Xtreme rings are not QD. They really need a wrench to keep them from working loose.

The IOR looks really nice but it's twice the price of the Burris.
