Ronk that sounds like a Ruger Mini 14 and it comes in 6.8spc.

Mike any other intel on how many moa you are dialing in at 600 to 1000 would be of interest also.  I think you are using a Rem 700 R5 mil spec - right  because i have one of them that is comming back from Walter Birdsong to have green T finish put on it so the 190 SMK load is very interesting to me.  I did have a Smith Vortex put on it before it shipped to Birdsong.  I'm struggling right now with the choice of optic for that rifle and found the one I ordered only has 50moa of internal adjustment and I have a plus 30moa Badger base so I'm wondering if it is going to work out.   Did you use a 600 yd zero then work from there?

Urimaginaryfrnd,
My personal bolt rifle is a PacNor Sniper.  M852 chamber 3.000 throat, 26 inch 1:12 barrel in AMU taper.
It rides in an H.S Precision PST03C stock, which is fully adjustable for cheek height and length of pull.
Come ups per 100 yards are 100 = 0.0 @ 2625fps, 1100 asl 70 degrees and 28.85 Hg station pressure.
200 = 1.75
300 = 4.25
400 = 7.5
500 = 10.25
600 = 14.25
700=  18.00
800=  23.75
900 = 28.00
1000 = 34.25

I know.
That's the one thing I don't like about my idea!
 Seriously, the Mini14 has come a long way, from what I hear. May be worth checking out these days.
 Actually, I was not aware they were available in 6.8, so thanks for the 'heads up', Wes.

No problem helping your friends to spend money is almost as good as spending it yourself. By the way  I ordered in some hi cap Ruger 223 mags just to see if I could actually get them and low and behold they appeared on my door step two days later then I had to go hunt down one of the  mini 14s and to my surprise it is quite accepatable as far as accuracy.  The ones I have had from the  70s and 80s were not very accurate.  Big Improvement. Down side to the 6.8 is no hi cap mags yet but its still a fine cartridge I just cant bring myself to load another caliber .308 stuff is hard enough to find.
Besides that the 6.5 Creadmore upper would  be the way to go one would think.

I just got my Rem 700 SS R5 mil spec and was wondering what bullet weight and type works best in this set up? Is the 190 SMK the way to go with this set up? I was going to start with some 168 HPBT's. But I would really rather not reinvent the wheel if I do not have to.

Sparky,
I would first ask, Do you reload?  I personally, would load up the 168s, 175s and some 190s.
Starting with 168s at 43.0gr of varget and work up .5grs til max load or pressure sign. Determine my best group. Then move on to the 175s and so on.  I have not shot the 190s out of my rifle yet but the farthest I can shoot at a range open to me is a 440 yard shot. 168gr A-max shoot great at that distance.  I think all would agree everyone's rifle is different but I get good results with 168gr A-Max over 44.5gr Varget, CCI BR-2 primer, in Lapua Brass at 20/1000 off the lands.  I think CT also shoots a variation of this.  Your freebore and and barrel sweet spot will determine were it likes them. I started at Std length checked my freebore and move in 20/1000 at a time until I got my best group. I wound up over 120/1000 over standard.  Again, I Checked Freebore First!!! I would recommend you doing the same if nothing else knowing the amount of freebore so you can check for throat wear.  Hope this helps.

Steelbenz,

Thanks for the reply. And no I do not reload yet. I have looked through some reloading manuals, but just do not feel comfortable with doing it without working with someone who KNOWS what they are doing. So I have just been using 168s from HSM in my Armalite AR 10 and was going to use them in my 5R. But like I said earlier if there is a different bullet that works best in my 5R then I would go straight to that rather than reinvent the wheel so to speak.

Any thoughts on some good reloading manuals? Some that I have looked through used some terms and did not really explain them which makes me very uncomfortable.

I use Hornady's #7.  There are many members here who reload and would glad to help you out. It has a very good prelude for explaining what is going on in the chamber and case as the round is fired.  Good reading for the novice reloader.

Sparky With and R5 Mil Spec if I couldnt reload I would use a 175 gr sierra match hollowpoint either in the Federal Gold Medal Match or the Black Hills as both are reliable. If you were not planning on shooting past 300 yds I would use the 168 gr but I think it is pointless to work with the 168 unless you are using the same bullet in a different rifle for some other reason.  Example a guy who loads for an M1a semi auto has to worry about bending the op rod if the bullet is too heavy or the powder charge is too heavy.  There is a fix with an adjustable gas plug but if you are not trying to feed anything but the R5 why bother with the 168 when the 175 will do better in the wind and get blown around a lot less.  If you were to hunt it you could always go to a Federal 180 gr Nosler partition:

Thanks Urimaginaryfrnd. I was unaware of the issue you mentioned. Do you know if I would have any problems shooting 175s in my Armalite AR 10T? It would be nice to have the same bullet for both rifles. But not nessicary. If that is going to be a problem I can certainly have two different bullet wieghts one for each rifle.

Also you mentioned Black hills and Federal. Do you know anything about HSM weather good, bad or indifferent?
