I'm looking at getting a .308 tc pistol for christmas. I'm looking at either the 2-7 or 3-12 power burris scopes. From everything I've read people seem to really like the burris handgun scopes, but I also see a lot of the 2-7 breaking under recoil. Some people say the 3-12 is too picky and hard to see out of. I have never used a handgun scope. I live in Indiana, we can't use rifles, so the handgun would be my "rifle". I want to be able to make the long shots. Which scope do I need? I would also play around with the longer shots not just a hunting gun. At my house I can shoot about 430 yards. I want something I can use in the woods and still make the longer shots with. What would you all say are the shooting ranges of these scopes?

I would get the 2-7 with the Posi-lock feature. Once you get it sighted in, lock it down, and you won't have to worry about it coming apart or shifting. Never really heard of them breaking under recoil, but I haven't really played with handgun scopes too much.

Get the 2-7 without Posi-lock. Mine has handled thousands of .454 Casull rounds with no problem. You might look at the 1.5-4, too. I have one on my .44 Mag and so far it's good.

How far would you say you could shoot with the 2-7 on deer or coyote sized targets. Would you get the ballistic plex or the one with the red dot in the middle of the crosshairs? |

oh, where I live I can't see these scopes in person. Is it easier to see out of the 2-7 vs the 3-12?

I have a Burris 3-12 on a Remington XP-100 in 7MM BR. At the lower end it is easy to see out of.....very clear also! At the top end the eyebox is hader to use. I bought the higher power simply because I wanted it and this may get dome groundhog action!

Well, the 2-7 is going to give you a much better FOV. I would lean toward that especially if you are going to be hunting in the woods. You should easily be able to shoot out to 350 yards if you really want too. The ballistic plex is the one I like. Makes hold over really easy.
I think the 2-7 is the only one you can get the posi-lock feature on if that is what you want. |

Would you think the red dot or the ballistic plex would be a better option? In the 2-7 you can't get a ballistic plex with red dot. It's one or the other. I've never owned a handgun scope, so I was just thinking if it's a smaller scope in the evenings the red dot may be easier to see than a dark crosshair.

Even though its FOV is narrower than the 2x7 Burris when looking through the scope, you still have both eyes open, quick acquisition and aiming capabilities which offsets its narrower FOV, while still capable of the longer range and more precision shooting.
This EER UCC Nikon is not only used as a rifle scope in the scout position (my particular use on a 300 WSM scout rifle with the duplex reticle), but it also makes for a great handgun scope too. The optics are wonderful, very clear and bright, no matter what the power setting. Regardless of the power setting, the fast focus eye piece on the ocular can be quickly adjusted to maximize the FOV. A friend also uses and has used this same Nikon on his (always hot loaded) Ruger 454 Casull S/R, so no need to be concerned with recoil or durabilty issues with this scope! Thousands of rounds so far with some by me.
Imo, a 12x on the hi-end even to 400-500 yards is unneccessary on a 308 TC. I have read past owner reviews on the 3x12 Burris`where the clarity had diminished set on the 10x to 12x. Whether this was changed for the better by Burris or not, I don`t know.
This particular Nikon scope is also explained further in a great article that you can read by Dick Metcalf now at,,,"shootingtimes.com",,,,,,"optics" section entitled "Dual Purpose Optics from Nikon."

My experience with a Burris pistol scope was not as good as some have reported above. I had a 2x with the posi-lock and it failed to take the recoil of my 44mag T/C. Burris to their credit fixed it twice, but I traded it off as I no longer had any faith in it. You appear to be more comfortable at longer shots with a handgum than I am and I find that 2x is plenty of magnification for my purposes. I have been experimenting the year with red dots and am becoming more fond of them all the time for my handguns.

It seems like I've seen where others have had problems with the posi-lock scopes. If I get a burris, I won't get it with posi-lock |

I had the Burris 3-12 and it REALLY SUCKS. I still have a 1x burris which has held up very well under 45-70 pistol recoil. The Leupold pistol scopes are Much better.
If you use a solid rest sand bag it, or a bipod you should be able to do very well with the .308 out to at least 300 yds likely further. Try a zero at 200 which should put you a couple of inches high at 100 and then figure point of impact at 300 etc - with a duplex check to see what distance correspons with the point where the cross hair goes thin to thick below the center x Likely about 350 yds at 8 power. I've had a .308 barrel and wish I still had it, the recoil is very reasonable compared to my 45-70 15 in. Some guys will scope them with rifle scopes but you have to pick calibers that dont have much recoil for that, you might get away with it with a .308 http://www.bullberry.com/ I highly recommend you use a Bullberry barrel rather than the TC barrel.
I do use the Burris Signature rings with the plastic inserts and Burris base and like them.

I have had a 2-7 Burris for several years on a .223 Contender and have had no problems. It is pretty hard to use at 7X, in low light or in the field. The FOV is small and the "eye box" is worse.
I have had one Posi-Lock and had no problems with it. Several other Burris scopes don't have it and I've never had a problem there, either. I prefer to be without the feature.

I have the 2-7x w/Posilock on a T/C Encore in 7mm-08. Never had an issue with it. Killed deer and hog out to 200yds. One thing I have noticed on the P/L feature: Once you have it zeroed, "locking" it will move your POI about a 1/2" at 100 yds. Once you figure it out you know to sight in 1/2" opposite before locking it down. Other than that, it performs like a champ. Agree with others re FOV and useability in low light at 7x. I usually keep mine about 4x - I'm tall and it gives good combination of magnification and eye relief. Good luck.

If you might be interested I have a Burris 1.5-4 EER Handgun Scope that is in good condition that I am looking to move. I posted a thread regarding it's worth. If by some chance you are interested I am more than flexible to try to make a mutual deal!

I had a similiar experience to DCAMM94 in that tightening thr P/L changed the POI. I failed to mention in my earlier post, that it was the P/L mechanism itself that went bad on my scope.
