Hello,
I am hoping to get some advice here.  I am building myself a 338 Lapua Mag rifle off of a Model 70 action this winter.  Using a Krieger barrel 1 in 9 twist.  But that isn't really the purpose of the post I am looking for the best scope I can get for it without breaking the bank.  I really can't go any higher than $800 on the scope, 5-6 would be better.  I hope to be shooting to at least 1000 yards with it.  Hopefully I can stretch that a bit but I think that will be due my ability rather than the gun or scope.  Thank you for any help.

I would get a 8.5x25x50 LRT by Leupold. Right now you can find one for $739 shipped. I just bought one. In my humble opinion you cant get a better all around package for the money. I use one on a .50 bmg with never a problem. You can also fing the same scope in 6.5x20x50 for $669 shipped. I use both these scopes in competition all the time, never been let down.

I know from experience that a SuperSniper won't break  $399.00
An Xotic won't break  $799.00
An IOR won't break  $800.00 1700.00
A schmict bender won't break  1 kidney

Whatever you get, make sure it does not have a 1" tube. 30mm or greater.

Mike's list is a good place to start.

A 10X Super Sniper can make shots out to 1,000 yards, and you have enough $$ left over for good mounts and rings - which you will most definitely need.

Are any of you familiar with the Vortex scopes?  I had someone tell me the vortex viper was another one to look at?

vortex has an awesome warranty they make a good scope, so does sightron the sII big sky is excellent and is well under your $800 most of them top out at $600 and thats for stuff with higher powers like you need, and they have good eye relief which you may want with that lapua

go look at a couple of these pages worth, koshkin holds them in high regards and that says a lot about there quality.

I would buy a 10x or 16x super sniper for now for $300 and then when you can get some more money saved up in a year or two get a Nightforce 5.5-22x.  That is a great scope for a .338 Lapua in my opinion.  Good glass, durable, great power range, and plenty of internal adjustment for the long range rigs.  You will be able to unload the supersniper for almost what you paid for it, and they are a pretty good scope.  Really good for the money.
Lifetime warranty and excellent customer service don't mean a thing when your gun fails during a zombie attack.
