Since badger rings are a matched set will they still need to be lapped like mark 4's?

I think that lapping is something left to personal preference and the tolerances of the total mounting system.

If you take the tightest tolerance set of rings ever produced, precise and exact to both specification and each other, do they guarantee precisely indexed ring mounts?  No, because the rings index off the base and the base off the receiver. Any issue is further exaggerated if the base became distorted from being torqued to an uneven receiver.

Ok, that makes a lot more sense than the way it was explained to me. Just let me say it back to make sure I really understand it. If my receiver is good to go, use a quality base like badger, tork it down with out distorting the base very little lapping will need to be done? This is the first rifle I have been able to pick and choose what I want on it, instead of being issued one and told "Thats all you got".

I'm mounting a leupold mark 4 3.5-10x40 on a impact performance rem 700 pss in 300 win mag. I want to keep the scope as low as possible. Will badger standard height 30mm max 50 rings on a badger 20 moa base be ok for 800 - 850 m?

The optimal optical axis (ring & base height) depends on the stock comb, your body build, shooting position, etc. Again, it is the shooter's preference.

I can't tell you if you ultimately need/want to lapp the rings and/or bed the base, etc.  I received the mounts in for a 700 tonight in the mail and I can't decide for myself if I want to bother bedding the base.  It's not a easy decision and it is hard to quantify the need.  It would be the first time doing it myself.

MOA wise, you'll have plenty to shoot a 300WM out to those ranges and beyond.

Badger rings are not to be lapped, according to the owner of Badger Marty. This will cancel the warranty. Obviously.

That said, a lot of guys do.

Boomholzer has made some good points too. I never have lapped Badger rings or bedded a Badger rail. Never had too.

Standard rings with a 40mm scope will probably work. Are you going to be using Butler Creek caps?? I would email Marty @ Badger or call to make sure.

My USO SN-3 has a 44mm objective, with an ERGO parallax adjustment, BC caps, and I had to go with mediums.

I will be using butler creek caps & a 2.5" leupold sunshade. The badger max 50 rings that I would like to use are only listed in standard height and tall. I'll contact badger today and see what their recommendations are. When I get their response I'll post what their reply is

Thanks

I would encourage you to look at the maximized Badger rings.

The Max 50's are nice for sure, but the Maximized rings will give you more options for ring height,(standard, medium, high), which would make getting a good cheek weld easier, I would think.

The maximized rings will handle that .300 Winnie's recoil too.

Ended up using Badger Max rings in standard height. Everyone was out had to drive to Badger Ordance to get them. Took my rifle and scope with me tried all three heights liked the standard best. Completed rifle shoots inside 1/2 moa @ 100 yds.

Just a thought-- even the cheapest rings are 10X stronger than the strongest scope (even Zeiss)- lets see pay 20 times as much for rings now we have rings 200 X stronger than the scope. Maybe now I can use the scope as a carrying handle. --- Or was the 20X the price for not having to lap?

Dale,

I think you ask why would I want to spend so much money on a base and rings (even though they are the most precisely made base and rings in the industry). When your life and the lives of others depend on your equipments performance is price really a factor? From previous encounters I have had with you on this site I would say we expect different things from our rifles and leave it at that.

Have a Remington 308 VSL 26 in.  stainless bull barrel.  Just bought the X.O.T.I.C scope and it sure is a fine looking 56m piece of work.  What rings and mount do you fellows think I should use?  Plan on using it for 1000 yard shooting.  Local gunsmith said I should just use some $29.95 rings and mounts.  After reading what all of you have to say, I don't think I want to go cheap.  Have the money to put good ones.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks you all in advance for your expertise.

Hi Jim.

I have a Remington VSLH .308 and run Badger Ord rail and rings.

Sure, you can get cheaper rings....But not better.  FWIW

Badger Ordance rings and bases are well worth their cost.

Using Badger Ord base / rings, if you get the base mounted correctly, you may need to  bed it, (depends on your receiver) you won't need to lap the rings. If you plan on shooting out to 1000 yds I would also recommend a 20 moa base.

Maybe not. The XOTIC has around 100 moa of adjustment they say. Thats plenty of "up" to get to 1000 yards with a .308.(50 moa?)

But a 20 moa rail is what I have, and I think it's a good investment. Who knows? He may change scopes some day and it's better to have and not need it.

Badger Ordnance are definitely some of the best rings money can buy.

jimbo,

We have the Badger base you need in stock right now. We're out of stock of the badger rings though, but you can get almost the exact same ring in an IOR ring. I pulled up your order and saw that you had the Mark 4 set up. Looked like you were just waiting for the rings to come in. I would consider the 20 moa Badger base as well. We had a guy come to the shop last week with a savage and had the XOTIC mounted. We originally put a Burris dual dovetail two piece base on. He had to come back a few days later, and get the badger 20 moa base. He didn't have enough elevation to get out to 1000 yards.

What caliber of rifle did he have, Brady? Curious...
