I hated the weight of the old version and this one seems to solve that problem. I'm just wondering what the "illuminated daytime reticle" is and how it is different than the standard one.
I'd be curious to see what battery life is. 22 hours seems terrible, which is what the old version was.

The Reticle is the exact same as the original "HEAVY" 3x25. I have the NAKED version & absolutely LOVE this scope. Actually looking for a second.

That looks like a pretty nice unit. The idea of a reticle that moves within the field when adjusted for wind and elevation bothers me, though. I think I would have a hard time getting used to a non-centered reticle.
Oh, and BTW, Welcome to OT, you guys! Edited by RONK - March/19/2009 at 20:42 |

Its not as distracting as one would think, but the illumination on the ior's I have have a serious red haze problem at night. take a look at the new burris with somewhat the same reticle, an honest 1x and still goes to 4x.

I forgot about this thread!
I actually ended up getting one. Here is the review I posted on ar15.com with pics.
Got the scope today. While I was pulling it out of the box, my first though was, "dammit, they shipped me the wrong one", because it was still heavier than sh*t. Upon further review, it was, indeed the correct model. I got it home and weighs 15.5 ounces, with the ring installed. Overall, it feels like less than a one ounce weight reduction- the old one is listed at 16 ounces. I bet they rounded DOWN from 16.8 ounces to get to that figure, though. You can still see the mounting holes for where the old mount would have gone, although they are very small. All the folks at Valdada did was remove a rail and change the mount. I was also concerned that one ring wasn't enough to hold up the scope. It is VERY sturdy.
I picked up an ACOG today and at first I thought the IOR Valdada was VERY blurry in comparison. Unfortunately, I neglected to realize that the Valdada was out of focus. After focusing it, I can honestly say that the glass is among the finest I have ever seen. The reticle is crystal clear. I tried taking a picture but wasn't very good at getting the full sight picture. About half of the full picture is missing. The ACOG in a Larue mount weights 14.2 ounces, 1.3 ounces lighter than the Valdada.
It sits VERY low, although that can be adjusted with a different ring. At certain angles, the front BUIS while flipped DOWN is visible in the very bottom of the sight picture. If it bothers me, I can switch out the rings.
Overall, I am very pleased with the purchase and plan on selling the ACOG. I thought it would be the other way around. I prefer the CQB reticle and like having focus and adjustment knobs. I also like that it sits a bit lower than the older version. I just wish IOR hadn't tried passing this off as a "lightweight" version, because it is pure bullsh*t.

The 3x25 has a centered reticle. 4x32 is the one with a non-centered reticle. ILya |

HMMM . Okay.
That's odd. I would have sworn I read a few sentences about the battlefield-proven durability of the non-centered reticle system in the link the O.P. posted.
I don't see any mention of it now, so I'll take your word for it, Ilya!
(Not that I wouldn't have, otherwise!)

I have played with 3x25 quite bit. Great little scope and the reticle is centered (and very fast to use). ILya |

The reticle is not centered. It comes centered from the factory, but when you sight in, it moves. Mine sits a little high left. It isn't a huge deal. I'm focusing on the reticle and the target, not if the amount of space around it is equal.
Its on the Valdada FAQ page. The 3x scope is specifically listed. |
