The Remington is a great choice. If you can find an older VS with the 24" barrel you will have an excellent rifle for shooting from a stand. The newer Remy's have 26" tubes. The 24" balance so nice you have to actually compare to feel it.

I saw a Savage match rifle in .243 today at a gun show. Really heavy barrel and an action that looked like a "custom". Price was very reasonable too. Very impressive. Check out the, I think, Savage 12/FTR with target action. It was on a table with "don't touch" signs (which really torques me off, but I blame the dealer, not the rifle) and the .243 was the most impressive looking of all. REALLY heavy barrel, nice laminate stock. It was TRULY an impressive looking rifle. Price was really good too, had the accu-trigger. Had there not been "do not touch" signs everywhere, I could tell you more about it. I will be looking to Savage in the future.

Here`s a good short video you should watch.
"shootingtimes.com"........."Video" section........"View all"..........click on "Accuracy Tips" and find the video.........."Accuracy in Rifles Barrels" with Boddington.
Unless you`re hunting varmits from a stationary position like from a truck hood with little hiking, a heavier barrel for any other type of hunting is not ideal, even from a stand. Heavier barreled rifles are all the more slower and more difficult to manuver and get into position. Leave the heavier stuff for the gym and enjoy your hunts with a lighter rifle.
My words of wisdom!

Yes, I always see precision shooters on the line at the club with pencil thin shorties.
The guy wants a heavy barrel rifle. Give him a choice there. Edited by tahqua - April/05/2009 at 21:54 |

Dude get the heavy barrel ,just don't put one of those stupid shell holders on the stock full of shells? and pick a fairly light scope. Leave the bi pod off till needed and have fun.

If your hunting from a stand I don't see why a heavy barrel would be a problem

my dad has a win m70 xtr in a .243 with a bull barrel on it, my favorite coyote rifle too. nothing wrong with what you want. i think most of the big boys have something to offer you. i know remington offers something like that, i suspect that ruger svage and wby do as well. tikka probably has something for you to look at also.
