I have finally recieved my new State Arms Rebel after eight months, its beautiful. The firearm is exactly what I had hoped for..... NOW the problem starts. I have to learn how to fire my rifle. I have recieved a little help from a few people who own a 50, but I am lost on the optics. I would like to be able to accurately shoot 1000yrds. I spent roughly 3000$, which I am ok with. I have no clue what scope I want to go with. I have a Burris TAC 2 NIB, I bought about a year ago.... YEP, FIRST EXPENSIVE MISTAKE. Now I know about the need for a 30mm tube, my 1'' won't do. LEUPOLD 4 is about the far end of my price range,  but I cant justify putting that expensive of a scope on a rifle that MAY only be used a few times and put into the back of the gun safe. YES unfortunately this is an investment gun unless I fall in love with it. I love shooting my 308 and its alot cheaper. Most of my extra money goes to bass fishing. I have looked on most of the big gun shooting forums. I see a good amount of positive feedback on the SuperSniper x16 but their ugggly.            QUESTION TO ANY 50 CAL SHOOTERS Can I get some advise? I am a novice, 28 years old, so please dont be too critical... Some people I have met are quiet opiniated and pretty proud of themselves.... not my style,, I am hear to learn..... Thanks               Blake

OK you think the Super Sniper is ugggly. Who gives a shi* it works GRRRREAT.  Be realistic here you dont want to drop a lot of $$$$$$$ into a scope to shoot a few times a year but you just laid out 3k on a rifle that is virtually worthless without a scope.  And even a newbie knows 50BMG breaks scopes.  I would suggest the soon to come out Super Sniper 10X HD but you still need money for plastic worms so I will suggest this:

SWFA SS 10x42 Tactical Riflescope Mil-Dot SWFA SS 10x42 Tactical Riflescope
Stock # - SS10X42M
  • Matte
  • Mil-Dot

Thank you for the responce Resident Redneck. I am leaning torwards the Super Sniper, but is the 10x going to make me happy. My favorite scope is a 6.5x24 on my 308... What I am asking is. How well will you be able to see a standard 1000yrd target with a 10x scope? thanks

Since it is an "investment gun" that you may not hang on to and that someone else might scope differently, get an SS in the magnification of your choice. That way, for relatively little money, you'll have a reliable scope that you can enjoy and if you choose to sell the rifle, someone else can test shoot. I know I would demand that before spending over $1000 on any firearm.

Funny how relative things can become. I shoot a lot of .22 because I consider my .308 handloads expensive. But something like a 50 can make .308 seem real economical.
Reaction time is a factor...

I guess 30-06 is economical compared to .50BMG, but I went to one of the ammo places I used to regularly buy from and 30-06 Fail Safe is $44.00 per box.  Reloading looks better and better.  At least with the .50BMG, I better understand the price.

+1 for what jonoMT said.
I have a friend that used to collect and shoot Barrett .50s. I think the first scope that survived continous use was an air rifle scope. While a Mk 4 Leupold should stand up to a 50 now, back then Leupys would break in no time. I think a 16x SS would be your best bet, a good solid scope that fits your needs, and doesn't cost a Schmidt & Bender. Who cares what it looks like, it works.
Life's concerns should be about the 120lb pack your trying to get to the top of the mountain, and not the rock in your boot.

Blake simply put you will be happier with a 10x Super Sniper than with one of the higher power ones.

Where you suffer with higher power scopes is dealing with mirage from the heat and a     10x becomes a better choice.  You also strike me as a guy who would enjoy the side focus but the less expensive rear focus works just as well.  Ideally the HD version with much better glass and the 1/10 mil clicks would be a better choice if you were keeping it long term, but you dont plan to. Probably a better investment would have been gold but that's a different story.  You will find that a 50 is miserable to have to carry any extended distance and miseerably expensive to shoot not to mention that most ranges will not allow you to shoot because they go much further than one might think sometimes even penetrating the range berm.  Liability is a huge issue and there is nothing more irresponsible than shooting someone you did not intend to shoot. As for a 10x scope a thousand yard target will look like open sights at 100 yds and if you switched to a 20x scope your 1000 yd target would look like open sights on a 50 yd target.  The real difference occurs in lower light where the exit eye pupil of the 42mm divided by 10 power gives you a 4.2mm exit eye pupil.  7mm being bright in low light.  Accordingly the 42mm divided by 20x gives you a 2.1mm exit eye pupil and the 42mm divided by 16x gives you 2.6mm exit eye pupil.   Think of it like waiting until sunset and  then putting on a pair of sunglasses.  Bright daylight no problem either way.  Low light makes it a big issue - one that you dont have with a high power variable scope because you can dial the power down to say 6x and brighten it up.  Want a variable better buy a Leupold Mk 4 that way when it breaks you can get them to replace it again and again.  Want to avoid that inconvenience buy the fixed power SS or bite the bullet and buy that Purdy Leupold Mk 4 if you like the look better.

Scopes are like women.
You want one with good looks and big knobs then shut up and get out the check book.
Otherwise hook up with what works, get the SS 1042M  or wait a very short time for the SS10XHD

Targets and 10x
tons of folks shoot 1000 yard standard targets with open sights.

1000 yard accuracy and 50bmg as a learning tool.
Get back to us on that one would you?

I am starting to figure out a few things on the long range shooting. I ended up with a BURRIS TAC 30 6-20X50. When I get all the facts, I hope to put a few of the things I have learned on youtube.com. Bore sighting, The barrel break-in, Hopefully ballistics. The Hornady ballistics calculator has given me a starting point. Hopefully I could make it easier for the next guy trying to figure out his 50 bmg. I bought 200 rounds of the Federal x33 660 grain made in LC 2008. I have found a safe place on the ranch to shoot and used the walking stick to get my ranges. I plan to use my top mil dot 0 @ 100 yrds and figure out where the bullet is at falling thru each mil dot to save moa, and make a little cheat card with my findings in my rifle case..     IF you have any advise for me from here, please send it... I will take all I can get... thank you and straight shooting.

Then you screwed up on the scope and should have bought the new 10x  HD version of the Super Sniper it has 1/10 mil clicks and lots of internal adjustment.

You bought a scope with 50 moa of internal adjustment that is 25 moa up and 25 moa down as in not enough internal adjustment. http://www.burrisoptics.com/ff30tactical1.html#65x20x

Want to be able to dial in correction buy the Super Sniper or get ready to spend some serious money on a Hensoldt, Nightforce, U.S. Optics, S&B, or at least a Leupold 4.5-14x50 which has 100moa of internal adjustment which is more realistic for what you will need.  Until you get the right scope you are just wasting ammo. Even then you need to learn how to read the wind.

Ballistic Coefficients of M33 647 ball is approx. .680 and API is .663. All you need to know is your velocity. Check out a couple of on-line free ballistic calculators such as:
www.eskimo.com/~jbm/calculations/calculations.html
Click on trajectory basic and plug in your data. Or download this free calculator:
www.huntingnut.com/index.php?name=news&file=article&sid=3
This download is PointBlank
Ballistic coefficient of a Hornady 750 A-Max is 1.050

Why spend $3000 on a rifle then $500 on a scope?  It's $5/shot, the scope is a huge part of the accuracy equation, I recommend you look at the package as an investment and put some good glass on it.

The 10XHD is the best glass, best features you will get for under $1,000.

You wanna make the setup worth something, put some really nice glass on it.

Freedom is something you take.
Respect is something you earn.
Equality is something you whine about not being given.
