LITTLE KNOWN TIDBIT OF NAVAL HISTORY...

The U. S. S. Constitution (Old Ironsides), as a combat vessel, carried 48,600 gallons of fresh waterfor her crew of 475 officers and men. This was sufficient to last six months of sustained operations at sea. She carried no evaporators (i.e. fresh water distillers).

However, let it be noted that according to her ship's log, "On July 27, 1798, the U.S.S. Constitution sailed from Boston with a full complement of 475 officers and men, 48,600 gallons of fresh water, 7,400 cannon shot, 11,600 pounds of black powder and
79,400 gallons of rum."

Her mission: "To destroy and harass English shipping."

Making  Jamaica on 6 October, she took on 826 pounds of flour and 68,300 gallons of rum.

Then she headed for the  Azores , arriving there 12 November. She provisioned with 550 pounds of beef and
64,300 gallons of Portuguese wine.

On 18 November, she set sail for  England . In the ensuing days she defeated five British men-of-war and captured and scuttled 12

Priorities.  If I had to live on those ships for that long I would go after the rum and whiskey first too.

Sound about logical to me... A bottle of rum and a cutlass, they took care of bidness.

Ok so let us look at this logically:
A crew of 475.
July 27 to 6 Oct= 70 days.
79400 gall/70/475 =2.38 gall per man per day!!!
6 Oct to 12 Nov = 37 days
68300 gall/37/475 = 3.88 gall per man per day.

18 Nov to 20 Feb = 94 days
64300 + 40000 + ????? captured = 104300 gall
104300/94/475 = 2.33 gall per man per day minimum

These navy guys could drink!!!!

When we entered Luanda airport in the late eighties (without passports) we found a hangar full of White Horse whisky. Each one of us had a case of whisky donated courtesy of FAPLA!

Not a single-malt, but still quite decent of them. I'm sure they were courteous hosts. No need to bother with formal documents among good friends.  Big Smile

No doubt -  One has to wonder how they moved a significant amount of liquid with no electric pumps and no forklifts.
