Topic: ED glass for riflescopes Posted: September/18/2009 at 13:56 |
There is much talk about ED glass and dielectric coatings for binoculars but I haven't ever seen this for riflescopes. Did I just miss it or is there some reason these features wouldn't be awesome for riflescopes too?

ED glass is used on a few scopes here and there. Nikon, Sightron and Zeiss definitely use it in some designs. I am pretty sure some others do as well.
Dielectric coatings referred to in binocular discussions are the reflective coatings on one of the surfaces of Schmidt-Pechan roof prism and have no business being anywhere near a riflescope.

Koshkin, is the new Super Sniper HD considered "ED"?
Not to dispute you Dan, I'm just not clear on the differences between the 2, if any.

HD is generally a marketing term which means "High Definition".
ED stands for "Extra Low Dispersion" which is a type of glass. HD does not mean that ED glass has been used. From a less than reputable brand the acronym HD would mean absolutely nothing.
As it comes to the new Super Sniper 10x42HD, I have not clue whether ED glass was used in or not (nor do I care, wuite frankly), but I do know that it handily outresolves the original 10x42 Super Sniper, so the HD label is well deserved and helps differentiate the two products from each other.

Thought I read that the HD was going to be ED glass, but could certainly be mistaken on that...
AFTER FURTHER REVIEW, SS MAY NOT MAKE ONE WITH ED GLASS...
OOOPS... it was an email I got asking if the new SS was going to be ED glass... I never did ask the question...

Al, the March scope I saw and all I've seen about them (I should probably go to their website, hunh?) indicates they are primarily benchrest. Before I do a web search, does March make a hunting model?

Thanks for all the great info guys. I'd never heard of March Optics... They're a little out of my price range. I wonder if we'll start to see ED in some of the more affordable scopes. Or maybe Zen would come out with a line of riflescopes?

What about Vortex Viper scopes - don't they claim to use extra-low dispersion glass? They call it XD -- same as ED?

Kelby sells them ... DEON Optics makes March scopes for benchrest, tactical and hunting. They are pretty pricey and comes with a 5yr warranty which requires shipment back to Japan for the warranty work.
The glass gets outstanding marks in the reviews on all the forums.
The tactical model I was considering before I read the warranty was $2750.

The thing that impressed me the most about the March's optics was the ability to...for the lack of a better explanation... 'see through' the mirage.
That is to say: the mirage was clearer and more distinct, while the target remained crisp and visible behind the mirage. When the mirage would go from a run to a boil and then flip the other way, I could actually see the target image displace laterally with the mirage.

Today I opened up the latest American Rifleman magazine and there was an ad for Vortex. Vortex Viper riflescopes have their XD glass which is what they call extra low dispersion glass.

Pretty impressive. The only one I've seen, 40x on a 6mm I was not familiar with, was at one of the ranges where I shoot sometimes. Guy was setting up a benchrest gun. I got to look through it for about a second. Very clean glass at initial impression. He was pretty busy and I did not want to bother him. It piqued my interest, though.

my sightron Slll 8-32x56 also has ED glass in it, maybe thats why it gets such great praises on its glass by so many. i have never heard a single negative remark regarding its glass anywhere!

Having used quite a few High End Scopes .I can say without a doubt The March is the best overall scope i have used. The tracking on these sopes is incredible.I shot a very nice Bull Elk on october the 12th at 905 yards with a 5-32X52 March with the MTR-1 reticle. Best clarity i have seen in a high magnification scope to date.
