I am going to mount one of these on a kimber 84m in 7mm-08 for whitetail. I don't care for the duplex reticle. In your opinions, should I go with a wide duplex, or heavy duplex? I really like the #4 that swarovski offers in their 3-9x36, but don't see that scope as being a $279 improvement over the Leupold.

Any experience with these Leupold reticles? I want light and compact to fit the rifle, so no conquest suggestions please  I know these are great scopes, but just don't fit the slim/trim profile of this particular rifle.

I won't have time to send the scope anywhere for a new reticle, so am limited to what Leupold offers.

Thanks in advance for any response.

I have the same scope and chose the wide duplex reticle. I also agree that a Conquest is too bulky and heavy for  a 84m.  Great choice of rifle and scope! You might want to check out the new Leo scope covers( flip back)....they look great and work smoother and quieter than any lens cover on the market. Also, the wide duplex reticle has a range estimating feature that you can use or ignore .

 zaj56,

Thanks for the reply. Do you know if the posts on the wide duplex are any heavier than the std duplex(like a #4) ,or is it simply wider?

After doing more research, I too am thinking this may be the way to go. I love the way the heavy stands out, but I think the heavy wires cover too much target for those 300 yd shots. These long shots, while not the norm like out west, are very possible where I will be hunting.

I'm really not sure if the posts are heavier or not but I do know that there is more space between the posts which allows a larger target picture at longer distances  and also makes it easier to zero in on moving targets.

If you ever consider changing powers you can get the #4 reticle in the following scopes:

Leupold 55010 1.5-5x20 VX-III German #4

Leupold 56830 3-9x40 VX-II German #4

Leupold 56940 3-9x50 VX-II German #4

I wouldn't worry about the cross hairs covering your target. You will still have your fine hairs in the middle to take precise shots. Here is a chart of the Leupold reticles:

If it were me. i'd opt for the std. Duplex reticle, since the lower post tip could easily act as a 2nd zero for your longer-range (300yd.) shooting. According to the scope specs. pg. in the catalog the lower post tip would be 2.5 MOA below the x-hair itself (at 8X). So if your sighted in for 200 yds. your max trajectory would only be about 1.5" above line of sight (with the 139 Hornady SST factory load at close to sea level). This would put the lower post tip at about 300-350 for your long shots. The 5.3" post tip to post tip subtension would act as a great reticle rangefinding tool also for deer. The wide duplex is >8 MOA to lower post (@ 8X)  which probably wouldn't help much unless u establish an in-depth "tactical-type" system for it.
