I've been looking for a pair of ED2s for my elk hunting trip next week. I called SWFA today and they are out of stock, so I guess it isn't going to happen.
What's the difference between the ED and ED2? I hate to buy an "older" model when I know I could buy the latest for not much more money...

You really need the ED and ED 2 side by side to see much difference. The ED 2 is a little brighter, but that may be due to is slightly more neutral color balance. The ED 2 also has a little better contrast and colors saturation, but the difference will likely only be seen when you have the two side by side. The ED has a smoother, slower focus wheel and the ED 2 has the repellent coatings. The price on the ED is more than a good deal.

Nate, I don't consider ED as older model as we will continue producing both ED and ED2. They are just different with some unique features on ED2. ED has slightly slower focus rate as desired by many hunter for steady viewing. Thanks

Interesting - that's good to know! Is that the only difference? In terms of optics, will the clarity and such characteristics be the same?
And to be sure I understand, when you say a slower focusing rate, do you mean it requires more turns of the "focus wheel" (if that's the right word)?
Thanks again,
Nate

The resolution is the same between ED and ED2. But under certain lighting condition, ED2 might excel because of its neutral color bias with dielectric prism coating. The comparison chart between ED and ED2 can be found here
Your understanding of focus speed is correct. ED2 is about 30% faster than ED. But most of the speed gain happens between minimal close focus (under 6ft) to 25ft. Beyond 25 feet, the difference is still there, but less noticeable. Although ED has slightly lower focusing speed, it feels smoother in use.
Thanks
