They have similar at Yuma sometimes. Have not been able to make one yet, haven't had one when I've been out there. I am sure there are other ranges that have similar events. Must be some in the DFW area...

Yes, the clock ticking and the range officer saying "30 sec left, 15 sec ...." really gets those pulled shots going!!!
We do have range officer training, but like in the Army, some guys make good Sgts and other guys remain... well not so great. There is a formal training manual with set standards etc.
In terms of our new Firearms Act everybody takes anything to do with guns seriously, as accidents, firarm theft etc can cost one dearly. Most ranges now employ a certified range officer, to minimise legal damages should something go wrong.
No we do not take hostages or prisoners, they end up on the meat hook!

most big shoots here have safety zones, no ammunition in that area but you can feel up the gun as much as you want, out of the safety zone, no weapons can leave their cases, or holsters-- either violation is automatic dq, (and a couple of hundred bucks in some cases).
politically correct term--hostage is called a no shoot.

I'm hoping the new gun club in the cave area will hold silhouette matches. Closest thing I can think of to the matches 8 is shooting.

Like it or not, when we put on the badge and take the oath we all become gun people. The job requires it!

I got to shoot in the full up battle simulator today. I was the topside gunner on HMMWV. There was a driver and two other gunners in the vehicle and 4 dismounted gunners. M4 with Barska scope made to look like ACOG, simulator geared toward realistic "ballistic operation". Had sound and feel, both were pretty close... Everyone was shooting against the same bad guys. Final score, I "killed" 58% of the available enemy combatants with no friendly or civilian kills. Everyone else killed the remaining 42% bad guys as well as a HOST of civilians and friendlies. IDPA keeps the reaction times low and the observance better than average. The military guys in the group don't shoot much. One engineer, a couple of doctors, two EOD guys. The EOD guys picked up most of the 42% and neither killed a civilian or friendly. I think one of the doctors shot himself...
Overall, very realistic combat simulation. The M4's were actual "deactived" weapons, the Barskas looked pretty close to the ACOG with a red + sight. I asked why they were using Barska and almost simultaneously the 3 sim personnel answered "CHEAP and easy to get"... A wonderful time was had by all. Just for info... the most unrealistic part (other than no bullets whizzing by my head) was no requirement to reload (it shoots forever), no barrel heating. However, I never fired in 3round burst mode.

That sounds like a lot of fun and excitement. Must be quite expensive equipment to set up?
