I just purchased a Marlin 980S bolt action 22.
I noticed it has grooves, and what appears to be 4 tapped holes where a base could possibly be mounted. I am a novice with 22 rifles so bear with me. Does this mean rings can be either mounted to the groove or to a base mount using these 4 holes? Im assuming the tapped holes is a better way to go? Is it unreliable to use groove mounted rings? My airgun uses these. I ordered the Nikon Pro Rimfire scope which comes with rings. Are these rings ok? Thanks! |

You got it.
Grooved receivers are common, almost universal among rimfires.
If you use high-quality rings they usually work okay.
My son just got a Marlin semi-auto which is giving us some trouble with the rings sliding in the grooves, even with good Warne 7.3 rings. The problem is that the bolt slams shut repeatedly and that "taps" the rifle forward out from under the rings, over long shooting sessions. I've never had the slightest trouble with any movement in my Remington bolt gun, and you won't either, with your bolt action.
I would try the rings you get with the scope if they look like good quality rings. If not, throw them away and go with the Weaver bases and a compatable ring system.
edited to add: The Weaver bases have a cross-slot that will completely eliminate fore-and -aft sliding of the rings, and will attach with supplied screws to the drilled and tapped holes in the top of the receiver. You have to be sure to order the correct bases for your rifle, (and they are available to match the stainless finish.)
Weaver, Leupold QRW and PRW rings, Burris ZEE rings some Warne ring models and many other manufacturers all make ring models compatable to Weaver bases. Edited by RONK - November/04/2009 at 19:38 |
